Occupational Health & Safety

Chaffey College’s Occupational Health & Safety Program is established to ensure and promote a safe and healthful working environment for all employees. This is achieved through systematic risk assessment, implementation of appropriate control measures, and medical surveillance, while maintaining compliance with regulatory requirements. The written plans below support the program's primary objective: to prevent workplace injuries and illnesses arising from occupational hazards.

Plan: Pending Update

Description: Chaffey College’s Bloodborne Pathogens Exposure Control Plan includes protections and safeguards for employees exposed to blood and other potentially infectious materials (OPIM) during their normal job duties.

Training Requirements: Risk Management will ensure training is provided to each employee who has duties that require them to work with blood and OPIM. Students will receive, if applicable, bloodborne pathogen training as part of their course curriculum from faculty.

PlanPending Update

Description: The Chemical Hygiene Plan aims to control chemical hazards and manage chemical safety in an effort to maintain a safe environment for all employees and students.

Training Requirements: Each employee shall receive training at the time of initial assignment to the laboratory, proper to assignments involving new exposure situations, and at a regular frequency as determined by the Chemical Hygiene Officer.

Description: The Ergonomic Safety Plan outlines procedures to identify, evaluate, and reduce risks of musculoskeletal injuries from repetitive motion, poor posture, and workstation design. It includes workstation assessments, employee training, and implementation of ergonomic controls such as adjustable equipment and safe work practices.

Training Requirements: Risk Management will ensure online safety training is provided to all employees with risk of ergonomic injury or as assigned by their manager/supervisor.

Description: The Hazard Communication Plan outlines how Chaffey College identifies, labels, and communicates information about hazardous chemicals in the workplace. It ensures employees and students have access to Safety Data Sheets (SDS), proper labeling, and training on chemical hazards and safe handling practices.

Training Requirements: Risk Management will ensure training is provided to all employees who have hazardous chemicals in their work area.

Plan: Heat Injury & Illness Prevention Plan (PDF)

Description: The Heat Injury & Illness Prevention Plan ensures that all employees working in indoor and outdoor places of employment or in other areas where environmental risk factors for heat illness are present, are protected from heat illness and are knowledgeable of heat illness symptoms, methods to prevent illness, and procedures to follow if symptoms occur.

Training Requirements: Risk Management will ensure training is provided to all supervisory and non-supervisory employees who have risk factors for heat illness.

Plan: Injury & Illness Prevention Program (PDF)

Description: The Injury and Illness Prevention Program (IIPP) complies with Cal/OSHA regulations and state law. It aims to actively reduce and control safety and health risks by outlining proper policies, procedures, and responsibilities for employees. By identifying and correcting potential or existing hazards, the number of workplace injuries and illnesses can be minimized.

Plan: Medical Waste Management Plan

Description: The Medical Waste Management Plan outlines procedures for safely handling, segregating, storing, transporting, and disposing of  laboratory, biohazardous, and other waste to minimize risks to people and the environment.

Training Requirements: Risk Management will ensure training is provided to each employee who has duties that require them to work with blood and OPIM, or those who must handle medical waste. Students will receive, if applicable, training as part of their course curriculum from faculty.

Plan: Outbreaks of Infectious Disease Plan (PDF)

Description: The Outbreaks of Infectious Disease Plan establishes procedures to prevent, detect, and respond to communicable disease outbreaks. It outlines protocols for case reporting, isolation, sanitation, communication, and continuity of operations to protect the campus community.

Description: The Workplace Violence Prevention Plan outlines the District’s procedures regarding workplace violence at all campuses and work locations.

Training Requirements: All employees, including managers, shall complete annual training on the identification and prevention of workplace violence.
