Celebrating LGBTQIA+ History Month

October 1, 2026

Dear Campus Community,

This October, Chaffey College joins campus communities across the nation in celebrating LGBTQIA+ History Month - a time to honor the history, resilience and contributions of the LGBTQIA+ community. This observance also highlights National Coming Out Day on Oct. 11 and commemorates the first and second marches on Washington for LGBTQIA rights in 1979 and 1987.

Thanks to the vision of Rodney Wilson, who in 1994 was the first openly-gay history teacher at a Missouri public high school, we have a dedicated time each year to reflect on the impact of LGBTQIA+ individuals throughout history.

At Chaffey College, we are committed to fostering a campus community in which every student, faculty and staff member feels welcomed and valued. Our LGBTQIA+ community is an important part of who we are, and we proudly recognize their impact nationally and globally.

This month is a wonderful opportunity to learn more about LGBTQIA+ History and to identify ways you can be supported or serve as a community ally. Please note the following campus recourses:

We encourage you to use this month to listen, celebrate, learn, and connect with one another. Thank you for helping to build a campus community where every voice and story matters, and where everyone has the opportunity to belong and thrive.

Sincerely,

Lisa Bailey
