What Happens After I Apply for CPL?

There are three Credit for Prior Learning (CPL) processes, depending on your CPL request:

  • AP, IB, and CLEP
  • Chaffey students (non-veteran)
  • Veteran students

For AP, IB, and CLEP Only (Standardized Exams):

  • The Transcript Evaluator Office/Admissions and Records will review and process your request.
  • You will be notified via your Chaffey email when your form has been processed.
  • Your test results can be viewed through the Chaffey Portal.

If your request cannot be processed, the Transcript Evaluator Office/Admissions and Records will note this on your Credit for Prior Learning Request Form and notify you through your Chaffey email.

Chaffey Student (All Other CPL Requests)

Once you submit your Credit for Prior Learning (CPL) request, here’s what to expect:

  1. We Review Your Request
A CPL counselor will review your form and will connect with you to better understand your goals and prior experience.
  2. Meet with a Counselor
You will meet with a CPL counselor to review your educational plan and explore how your prior learning can apply to your program.
  3. Faculty Evaluation
If needed, faculty in your subject area will review your experience. Faculty will review your submitted evidence to determine if it meets the course learning outcomes and decide whether to award credit with a grade.
  4. You Make the Final Decision
Once a decision is made, you will be notified and can choose to:

    • Accept the credit (go to step 5)
    • Decline the credit (CPL process ends)
    • Submit an optional appeal (A form will come soon. In the meantime, please contact your CPL counselor)
  5. Credit is Posted
If you accept, your credit will be added to your transcript and applied to your educational plan.

Veteran Chaffey Student

If you are a veteran or active-duty student, your process includes additional support:

  1. Military Records Review
Your Joint Services Transcript (JST) and/or DD214 will be reviewed for eligible credit.
  2. Meet with a VA Counselor
A VA counselor will work with you to review your program and identify CPL opportunities based on your military experience.
  3. Faculty Review (if needed)
If faculty have already approved credit recommendations, faculty review is no longer needed. New credit recommendations will require faculty approval.
  4. You Make the Final Decision
You will be notified of eligible credit and can choose to:
    • Accept the credit (go to step 5)
    • Decline the credit (CPL process ends)
    • Submit an optional appeal (A form will come soon. In the meantime, please contact your VA counselor)
  5. Credit is Posted
If accepted, your credit will be added to your transcript and applied to your educational plan.
