Chaffey Students Gather for Panther Prep

When Casey Walker decided to enroll at Chaffey College for fall, it wasn’t just because it was close to home or a low-cost option. His two sisters – proud Panthers themselves – convinced him it was the right place to go.

“They said I would be comfortable here to start off,” he said.

Walker, a Summit High School graduate, was one of almost 500 students who came to Chaffey College to see the campus, learn about majors and student support during Panther Prep events July 22, 29 and 30. The event, previously known as “Orientation Day,” gives students a chance to tour the campus, attend workshops and a resource fair, and enjoy some food.

Jesus Espinoza came to Chaffey with his future completely mapped out. The Mexican national immigrated to the U.S. four years ago with the goal of becoming a doctor.

“I want to get my general education here, get a bachelor’s at a CSU or UC and then I want to apply for medical school,” he said.

Mia Amezola, a Bloomington High School graduate, dreams of becoming a newspaper journalist and chose Chaffey to start her journey.

“I’m really excited to start this chapter of my life,” she said.

For A.B. Miller High School graduate Cesar Hernandez, coming to campus for the first time was a moment of pride not just for himself but also his family.

“They’re proud,” he said. “They’ve always wanted me to go to college and I’ve always wanted to get a higher education.”

Rabia Kazi connected with Disability Programs and Services for support as a deaf student. She previously earned a degree in mathematics but returned to school to shift to a career in accounting.

“I’d like to get a certificate and work in a payroll department,” she said.

For Alexa Hutchins of Upland, coming to Chaffey to be a nursing major gives her a chance to follow in the footsteps of her grandmother.

“My grandma’s a nurse and I’ve heard all her stories about the ICU and ER departments and it’s something that I’d like to do,” she said.
