Honoring the Farmworker Movement
March 25, 2026
Dear Campus Community,
Chaffey College has celebrated the life and legacy of civil rights activist César Chávez the last few years by closing the campus in observance of the national holiday. As a college community, we are troubled to learn of the serious allegations that have recently surfaced against him. We stand firmly in support of all victims of sexual abuse who are brave enough to come forward to share their stories.
While the college will remain closed in observance of the holiday on March 31, we believe the day represents more than the work of one person, but instead the work of many that resulted in a historical movement to protect the lives of farmworkers. The College is currently working to rename the holiday to celebrate that important work. More information will be provided on the name change in the future.
Sincerely,
Henry D. Shannon, Ph.D.
