Passing of Civil Rights Leader Dolores Huerta
October 28, 2026
Dear Campus Community:
Today, we learned of the passing of Dolores Huerta, a pioneering civil rights leader, co-founder of the United Farm Workers union, and lifelong champion for social justice. Huerta passed away at her home at the age of 96, leaving behind an extraordinary legacy of advocacy, service, and change.
Throughout her life, Huerta fought to improve the lives of farmworkers, women, and underserved communities. A former educator, she understood the transformative power of education and believed that meaningful change begins when individuals find their voices and take action to improve their communities. Her commitment to this work continued well into her 90s.
At Chaffey College, we are proud to serve a diverse student population and remain committed to fostering a sense of belonging where every student has the opportunity to improve their life, pursue their goals, and discover their purpose, regardless of their background or circumstances.
As we remember Dolores Huerta, we honor her legacy by continuing our work to advance equity, expand educational opportunities, and provide the support our students need to succeed. Her enduring message, “Sí, se puede,” reminds us of the power we each have to make a difference.
Sincerely,
Lisa Bailey
