Do I have to make an appointment
to see a tutor?
Although students may drop
by the Writing Center to fill any open appointment slots, reserving an
appointment in advance for Writing Center Services is strongly
recommended. For more details on making an
appointment, click
here.
What if I am late for my appointment?
Late
arrivals may lose their slot to a student who is waiting for an
available appointment slot. Lateness will be determined by the time on the
Writing Center's clock.
How long are the appointments?
Directed Learning Activity sessions are 15
minutes long with the exception of Diagnostic Exercise
review sessions, which are
30 minutes long. Tutoring sessions are also 30 minutes long.
Study groups and workshops are
approximately 60 minutes long.
What is a Directed Learning Activity?
You can
improve your writing skills by completing instructor-designed Directed
Learning Activities. You will discuss your findings with a tutor and learn how to
apply them to your essay. However, you must complete the independent
portion of the Directed Learning Activities prior to meeting with a tutor.
What is a workshop?
Throughout the semester, the Writing Center offers one-hour
instructor-led workshops on various topics: Summarizing a Piece of
Writing, Proofreading Your Own Paper, Utilizing Instructor Feedback, and
Preparing for the English 450 Final. Workshops are limited to ten
students and tend to fill up
quickly. Advanced reservations are strongly recommended and can be
requested up to six business days in advance.
What is a study group?
An
instructor can arrange for a tutor to conduct a 60-minute small
group session with no more than five students working on the same
assignment or skill set. Study group times are set up by the
classroom instructor, and reservations are made through the Writing Center.
What happens in a tutorial
session?
In a collaborative effort, you and a tutor work side-by-side discussing
your ideas and your writing. By identifying your strengths and weaknesses
as a writer, the tutor will introduce you to the skills and concepts
that will enable you to develop your effectiveness as a writer. You
will develop your critical thinking skills and gain confidence in your
ability to produce competent, college-level writing.
Who are the tutors?
The Writing Center is staffed by friendly and professional faculty
instructors, graduate students, and peer tutors who are all interested in
writing and in helping students become better writers. The tutors attend
training sessions that address the latest in writing center theory and
practice and are dedicated to student success.
For what classes can I go to the Writing
Center?
You may make an appointment to come to the Writing Center for any
class just as long as your appointment is for a Directed Learning
Activity, workshop, study group, or tutoring session. The tutors are trained
to work with students at different grade levels, from
various academic disciplines, and at different stages in their
writing development.
How many hours do I
need to fulfill for my English class?
If you are taking
English 550, 450, or 1A, you must complete five hours of supplemental
instruction in a learning success center. Time spent on Directed
Learning Activities, workshops, and study groups all count towards
supplemental instruction. However, tutoring sessions DO NOT count
toward your required time. You should always remember to log out
upon leaving the Writing Center, or you will only be given one minute of
credit.
Can I come to the
Writing Center to type a paper or research online?
Computers for word
processing and research are only available in the
Library. Nine
computers are available in the Writing Center for Directed Learning
Activities only. These computers must be checked out at the front
desk and will be monitored by Writing Center
staff.
Can I do my homework in the Writing Center?
Homework may be
completed in the Library. You may only work on Directed Learning
Activities in the Writing Center.
