FAQ

Q: What is CalWORKs?

A: CalWORKs is a program developed to support students who receive public assistance (cash aid) while they are attending Chaffey College. We will assist you in identifying and achieving your educational and career goals.

Q: How can the program help me?

A: CalWORKs was developed to help move individuals from welfare to self-sufficiency through education and training opportunities. Supportive services may include:

  • Educational counseling
  • Limited personal counseling/referrals
  • Career Counseling
  • Priority Registration
  • Work study employment on and off campus
  • Resume assistance
  • Child care
  • Tutoring
  • Workshops and seminars for personal and professional development
  • Complete mandated county verifications of your educational activity
  • Advocacy for your continued education and success
  • General Support and information

Q: How do I qualify?

A: You must be receiving CalWORKs (cash aid, formerly AFDC) and enroll in an approved program leading to gainful employment. Additionally, we require two counseling appointments per semester with a CalWORKs counselor. During these appointments, we will complete required county documentation and check your academic progress.

Q: How is CalWORKs Work-Study different from Federal Work-Study?

A: Both CalWORKs Work-Study and Federal Work-Study are available to the CalWORKs student. Federal Work-Study occurs on campus and is usually a student clerk position with a maximum of 19 hours per week. These positions usually end at the end of the semester or until the Federal Work-Study award is exhausted. You must qualify for Federal Financial Aid to participate in Federal Work Study.

CalWORKs Work-Study can also occur on campus, but primarily are off-campus with an area employer. Every attempt is made to place the student in a position that relates to his/her major. To be eligible, students must have a 2.5 G.P.A. in the preceding semester and must enroll in at least 9 units Fall/Spring Semesters and 0.5 units for Summer Semester. CalWORKs Work-Study positions are not limited to 19 hours per week, but students need permission from the Director to exceed 20 hours per week.

Both programs require students to maintain a 2.00 Grade Point Average and satisfactory progress (adhering to educational plan).
