Classic Drama by Tennessee Williams
Directed by Christa El-Said
Performance dates: November 8, 9, 10 at 7:30pm and November 11 at 2:00pm
This Pulitzer Prize-winning play, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, debuted on Broadway in 1955. Cat concerns the conflicts of a Mississippi family following the diagnosis of its patriarch, Big Daddy's, stomach cancer and the revelation of his alcoholic son's homosexuality. In 1958, director Richard Brooks adapted Cat into a hugely popular film starring the stunning Elizabeth Taylor as "Maggie the Cat" and Paul Newman as "Brick."
Williams is generally recognized as one of the greatest writers to emerge from the American South as well as a chief architect of the new American drama that followed in the wake of World War II. Certainly his plays shocked their contemporary audiences in their unprecedented treatment of alcoholism and other secret traumas that haunt the everyday. This American classic drama still has much to say to contemporary theatre audiences about mendacity and honesty. The play takes place in Big Daddy's plantation home on the Mississippi Delta on a summer evening in 1957.
