What can I
do in the Language Success Center?
Students taking a modern language
or certain ESL courses may need to come to the Language Success Center
to complete required lab hours for their course.
In order to receive credit for lab hour
requirements, you must be participating in one of the following
activities:

Directed Learning
-
Workshops
-
Study Groups
Directed Learning activities may
include workbook activities, computer software practice,
videos/summaries of the video, or skill builders. Each instructor
should give you directions in your syllabus or in class/assignment
sheets regarding your 14- hour requirement. Students taking a language or ESL course
at Chaffey can benefit from the numerous resources available in the
center. In addition, students taking Chaffey classes other than ESL or
language courses with ESL grammar, writing, and conversation needs can
also utilize the services in the Success Center.

What do I
need to use the Language Success Center?
You must be currently enrolled in a
Chaffey College course Have a current Chaffey photo ID. It is
recommended that you bring a diskette, CD or flash drive to save your
work.
Why do I have to complete 14 hours
in the center?
Curriculum standards for all language courses include lab hours.
Learning a language requires practice and interaction with the language
outside of class; this additional exposure to the language improves
fluency.
Who stamps and signs my directed
learning form?
Any staff member can sign and stamp your form once you show that it
has been completed.
How do I know how many hours I have
completed?
Every time you sign out, the computer displays the total amount of
hours completed. Credit hours count toward your 14-hour requirement,
but noncredit hours (tutoring and use of lab resources) do not.
Students are to monitor their hours by looking at the display when they
sign out of the lab. Your instructor will receive a printout of your
hours periodically during the semester as well.
How do I check out materials?
If you need to check out answer keys, dictionaries, videos, or other
materials, ask for the items in the Resource room. A staff member will
give you the item in exchange for your student ID card. All materials
must be used ONLY IN THE LAB- please do not take any materials outside
the center.
What do I do if I need tutoring?
Let the front desk assistant know that you would like to sign up for
a tutoring appointment or a walk-in tutoring session. Appointments can
be made 3 hours or more in advance. When you arrive for your
appointment, let a tutor or front desk assistant know that you have
arrived. If you don’t have an appointment, sign in under the “walk-in”
section and let the front desk assistant or tutor know that you need to
see a tutor.
Does the tutoring cost anything?
Free tutoring is available to all Chaffey College students in most
academic subject areas.
What do I do if there are no
computers available?
We have a sign up sheet in the front of the tutoring sign-up
binder. Let the front desk assistant know that you are in need of a
computer and write your name on the waiting list.
Does it cost money to print?
Printing is currently free in the Language Success Center; however,
we ask you to limit your printing to 5 pages. If you need to print more
than 5 pages, ask a staff member for assistance. We may sometimes use
scratch paper in our printers, so please let us know if you will need
clean paper in the printer.
Does the Success Center have a
copier for us to use?
We do not have a student copier. You will need to go to the library
or the Student Activities office to make copies.
What do I do with my food/drinks?
Please leave any food or drinks on top of the filing cabinet which
is directly in front of you when you walk through the door.
