The five hour supplemental instruction requirement for English 550, 450, and 1A can be satisfied by completing Directed Learning Activities, workshops, and study groups.

Tutoring on assigned papers does not count toward supplemental instruction. You may complete the five hours of supplemental instruction at the Writing Center on the Rancho Campus and the Success Centers in Fontana and Chino.

Directed Learning Activities

One way to satisfy the five hour supplemental instruction requirement for English 550, 450, and 1A is to complete Directed Learning Activities. These activities consist of an independent portion that takes approximately 30-45 minutes to finish and a follow-up session with a tutor that lasts approximately 15-30 minutes depending on the activity.

The independent portion of a Directed Learning Activity can be done in the Writing Center without an appointment. However, an appointment must be set for the follow-up session with the tutor.

The Writing Center offers the following Directed Learning Activities.

• Diagnostic Exercise
  Find out how well you understand essay structure and development, punctuation, and grammar.
• Purpose, Audience, and Tone
  Become a more persuasive writer by considering the elements of effective communication.
• Summary Skills for Academic Writing
  Learn how to summarize without plagiarizing, an important skill in research paper writing.
• Evaluating Online Resources
  Learn how to select credible sources for your research paper.
• MLA Works Cited List
  Practice making a works cited list in preparation for research paper writing.
• Introduction to Essay Structure
  Review the major components of an essay and the logical connections between these components.
• Time Management: The Writing Process
  Better understand your writing process and utilize time management strategies in order to become a more effective writer.
• Avoiding Plagiarism
  Understand this serious offense and how to avoid it.
• Argumentation: Opposing Viewpoints
  Strengthen your argumentation skills by examining issues from opposing viewpoints.
• APA Reference List
  Practice making a reference list in preparation for your research paper

You will need to bring in a paragraph or essay that has been commented on by your instructor to complete the Directed Learning Activities below:

• Run-on Sentences
• Fragments
• Subject-Verb Agreement
• Utilizing Instructor Feedback—-Prioritize your instructor's comments to revise your paper.

 

Workshops

Another way to satisfy the five hour supplemental instruction requirement for English 550, 450, and 1A is to attend a Writing Center workshop. Workshops are 50 to 60 minute small group sessions that are taught by faculty tutors and cover a range of topics from prewriting activities to research papers.

Workshops are limited to ten participants and tend to fill up quickly. You can set an appointment for a workshop up to six business days in advance.

Study Groups

Yet another way to satisfy the five hour supplemental instruction requirement for English 550, 450, and 1A is to attend a study group.

Study groups are 50 to 60 minute instructor designed sessions that focus on a particular writing skill or assignment. Instructors may arrange study group sessions by contacting the Writing Center. Check with your instructor to find out if a study group has been scheduled for your class.
