Supplemental Learning Requirement
English
The 4-hour supplemental learning requirement for English 500 and 550 and 3-hour supplemental learning requirement for English 450 and 1A can be satisfied by completing Directed Learning Activities, workshops, and learning groups.
Directed Learning Activities
One way to satisfy the supplemental learning requirement for English 500, 550, 450, and 1A is to complete Directed Learning Activities. These activities consist of an independent portion that takes approximately 30-45 minutes to finish and a follow-up session with a tutor that lasts approximately 15-30 minutes depending on the activity. The independent portion of a Directed Learning Activity can be done in the Success Center without an appointment. However, an appointment for the follow-up session with the tutor is strongly recommended.
Workshops
Another way to satisfy the supplemental learning requirement for English 500, 550, 450, and 1A is to attend a Success Center English workshop. Workshops are 50- to 60-minute small group sessions that are taught by faculty tutors and cover a range of topics from prewriting activities to research papers. Workshops are limited to ten participants and tend to fill up quickly. You may set an appointment for a workshop up to five business days in advance.
Arrive ten minutes before the workshop begins. If you arrive late, you may lose your reserved spot to a student on the waitlist.
Learning Groups
Yet another way to satisfy the supplemental learning requirement for English 500, 550, 450, and 1A is to attend a learning group. Learning groups are 50- to 60-minute sessions that focus on a particular writing skill or assignment. While the Success Center offers learning groups on set topics, instructors may arrange learning group sessions on topics of their choice by contacting the Rancho Writing Center, the Chino Success Center, or the Fontana Success Center. Check with your instructor to find out if a learning group has been scheduled for your class.

Reading
Supplemental learning (S.L.) consists of learning activities that occur outside regular class hours. Reading students are required to complete at least ten hours of assigned activities over the course of the semester. The activities may include Directed Learning Activities (DLAs) and workshops and/or learning groups. Students may complete their supplemental learning at the Multidisciplinary/Reading Success Center at Rancho in BEB-101, the Chino Success Center in CHMB-145, or the Fontana Success Center in FNFC-122. Tutoring, class activities, and homework do not count toward supplemental learning hours.
Directed Learning Activities
One way to satisfy the supplemental learning reading requirement is to complete Directed Learning Activities (DLAs). DLAs consist of an independent portion and a follow-up session with a tutor. Students receive a list of DLAs with due dates required for their course. It is strongly recommended that students complete DLAs in the Success Center in order to ensure credit is received for the ten hour requirement. Once the student completes the independent portion of the DLA, he or she must meet with a tutor for a DLA review session. Consult the DLA review schedule for your class when scheduling review sessions.
Workshops
Another way for reading students to satisfy the supplemental learning requirement is by attending Success Center workshops. Workshops are 50 to 60 minute group sessions, taught by Success Center faculty, covering topics designed to help students succeed in their reading classes. Schedules of workshop topics, dates, and times are available at the Success Center or online. Workshops are available on a first come, first served basis. It is strongly recommended that students sign up to reserve a workshop space, as most workshops fill quickly.
Learning Groups
Students may also satisfy the supplemental learning requirement by attending Success Center learning groups. Learning groups are 50 to 60 minute sessions, led by Success Center apprentices, covering topics designed to help students succeed in their reading classes. Learning group schedules are available at the Success Center or online. It is strongly recommended that students sign up to reserve a learning group space, as most groups fill quickly.
Verification of Completion
Credit hours are automatically recorded on the Success Center attendance computer each time a student logs in and out. Students must bring their verification sheet and I.D. card for every visit and are responsible for remembering to log in and log out. If students fail to log out at the end of an activity, the computer will give them only one minute of credit for the session. DLAs and verification sheets are signed and stamped by Success Center personnel only after students have reviewed the completed activity with a tutor.
Deadlines
Students are expected to meet the activity deadlines listed on their verification sheet. Workshops and learning groups are available only on the dates listed on the schedule. Students who wait until the last minute may not be admitted to workshops or study groups, as space and personnel are limited. DLAs will not be reviewed before or after their review date without permission from the instructor. No activities may be completed after the final deadline.
