Academic Grievance

Classroom Conflict Resolution:

When a disagreement arises with a professor on an issue, students are encouraged to take steps appropriate to resolving the conflict.  The process outlined below can be helpful in a rapid resolution to most instructor/student issues.

Step 1:  Speak with your instructor about the issue.  This gives the instructor the opportunity to identify an error (if any) and resolve the matter quickly, or to provide rationale that would be helpful in understanding a conflict arising, for example, from a grading dispute.

Step 2:  Speak with the Coordinator of the discipline.  In the event that you have discussed the issue with the instructor, and you still feel the issue has not been resolved or explained to your satisfaction, it is sometimes helpful to broaden the discussion to include the Coordinator that oversees instruction for the discipline.  Coordinators are listed below:

Coordinator: Tim Arner

Office: PS-12, Phone: 909-652-6429
Disciplines:   MATH Success Center

Coordinator: Dale Deslauriers

Office: ZH-102, Phone: 909-652-6407
Disciplines:   BIOL

Coordinator: Cathie Keenan

Office: CHEM-111, Phone: 909-652-6422
Disciplines:  CHEM, DRAFT, ENGIN, and PHYS

Coordinator: Joyce Oakdale

Office: CHEM-116, Phone: 909-652-6424
Disciplines:   ASTRON, ESC, GEOG, GIS, GEOL, and PS

Coordinator: Wes Tom

Office: PS-9, Phone: 909-652-6482
Disciplines:   MATH and STAT

Step 3:  In the event the issue has still not been resolved by speaking with both the instructor and the Coordinator, an appointment can be arranged with the Dean to discuss the matter further.  The Dean may then make recommendations for action where appropriate.

It is important to note that these procedures are intended to help students resolve academic complaints quickly.  If your complaint is such that you do not feel safe speaking with your instructor, you should seek out assistance from any college personnel that will assist you as appropriate.
