Paul Pearce |
Jack White Engineering Physics Award This award was established to honor Jack White who taught physics at Chaffey College for thirty-eight years. During that time he also taught mathematics, geology, and chemistry, served for five years as the Assistant Superintendent for Business for both Chaffey College and Chaffey High School, and served as the Faculty Senate President for one year. Jack’s activities were not limited to the classroom. He was assistant football coach for twelve years and head wrestling coach for fourteen years. In April of 1996, Jack was inducted into the Chaffey College Hall of Fame. Jack served his country as a Navy Commander, flying in the Pacific in World War II. He was a naval reservist for thirty years. He is an outdoor pistol NRA Master target shooter. His hobbies include piloting sail planes and hiking. He has climbed Mt. Whitney three times. This award is presented to the top second-year student in the calculus-based physics sequence for scientists and engineers. Paul Pearce After Paul completes his lower division requirements at Chaffey, he hopes to attend UC Berkeley for a B.S. in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, and possibly continuing on to earn a Master’s. After completing school, Paul plans to start his own business

Freshman Chemistry Achievement Award Chaffey College annually awards a hardbound copy of the CRC Handbook of Chemistry and Physics to the outstanding freshman chemistry student. Jeannette Hand Jeannette received her B.A. in Business Administration in 1990. She is now returning to school to pursue a new career as a Registered Dietician. Jeannette plans to transfer to Cal Poly Pomona to complete the Master of Science Program in Foods and Nutrition.

Outstanding Student Of Chemistry The faculty of the Chemistry Department annually chooses the outstanding chemistry student. Physical Sciences faculty have donated the funds for this award as encouragement to their students to continue their excellent achievements. James Beck One of James’s special interests is the Spanish language which he hopes to major in when he transfers to a 4-yr University next year. In the future James plans to attend Dental School (hopefully in California) and to start his own family.

Ella Mae and Lawrence R. Quarles Physical Science Achievement Award This award is given to honor the parents of a former staff member. In 1927, Mrs. Quarles was the first woman admitted to the Engineering School of the University of Virginia. She began a chemical engineering major, earned her BA in Science Education and taught chemistry in high school. Her husband, Dr. Quarles held the record for the highest grade point average earned by an undergraduate at the University of Virginia, School of Engineering for over 40 years. He earned his Ph.D. in Physics, was a professor of electrical, electronic, and nuclear engineering, and was Dean of the University of Virginia School of Engineering for 18 years. Timothy Reynolds Timothy is currently undecided as to his choice of a university, but will be transferring this fall. He hopes to combine his major, Chemistry, and his minor, Chinese, to work internationally. |

Matthew Hurd |
Rodney Arner Pre-Calculus Scholarship Professor Rodney Arner, after completing a Masters’ Degree in Mathematics from UC Berkeley and service in the US Army Air Corps as meteorologist/air controller, taught Mathematics and Surveying at Chaffey from 1948 to 1986. During his tenure, he served on numerous committees and assignments including President of the Faculty Senate and Chair of the Physical Science Division. Always a popular teacher with students and a well-respected colleague amongst Chaffey faculty and staff, Mr. Arner was honored with the Chaffey Meritorious Service award shortly after his retirement. Involved in curriculum and course development his entire career, he initiated and taught Chaffey’s PreCalculus course and wrote and published the textbook Preparation for Calculus. Matthew Hurd Matthew plans to transfer to UC Riverside in fall 2007 to complete his Bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry. After that, he plans to apply for medical school, which has been his goal since the seventh grade.

Lewis Grimm Memorial Scholarship For College Physics Lew Grimm, a graduate of Cal Tech, was an outstanding teacher of physics, engineering, and mathematics for 37 years (four as a Professor Emeritus) at Chaffey College. He also taught real estate classes and coached the Chaffey Tennis Team. For many years, he was the head of the Physics and Engineering Department, and served with distinction on the Statewide Engineering Liaison Committee. His keen analytical mind, remarkable imagination, warm sense of humor, and caring attitude were deeply appreciated by his students. This award is presented to the top student in the trigonometry-based college physics. James Beck Congratulations to James's for his second award.

Dr. Robert Lubarsky Memorial Scholarship Dr. Robert Lubarsky was an instructor of biology for many years. Dr. Lubarsky died very suddenly and unexpectedly in August, 1974. His many friends, students and staff alike, have built a scholarship fund that supports this award. The award is given to a student who has completed a course in microbiology, one of Dr. Lubarsky’s specialties. Recipients of this award have demonstrated achievement and an unselfish willingness and ability to help others. Of this scholarship, Dr. Richard Beeks, former Chair of the Life Science Division, said, “In a very small way, we hope to perpetuate his image in developing students.” Dena Bentley Dena is a married mother of three children. She enjoys spending time with family and friends and helping others. She currently tutors students in Anatomy, Physiology & Microbiology at the Rancho Success Center and recently started the ADN Program here at Chaffey. Dena is looking forward to helping others as a future Registered Nurse.

Ray Belnap Memorial Scholarship This scholarship is given to honor a great humanitarian and a devoted mentor whose life served as an excellent model for many people. David Enriquez David has been accepted to both Cal State San Bernardino and UCR and has also applying to Pitzer College in Claremont. He says he’s not sure which school he will attend. David is majoring in Biology and plans to continue his education either as a Physicians Assistant or in the field of Forensic Science

Robert Adams Case Memorial Scholarship The Chaffey College Engineering Club has established this scholarship in memory of Robert Adams Case, an Engineering Club member and leader, who was taken by death during his attendance at Chaffey College. This is a perpetual scholarship of which the recipient is selected by the Engineering Club members and advisor. The award goes to an active member of the club. Matthew DeVost Matthew’s future plans are to attend Cal Poly Pomona for a degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering so he can find a job that he actually likes doing! He plans to pursue a JPL internship. His special interests include lifting weights, snowboarding, contract designing, and working on special design projects for small customer bases. |

Arthur E. & Gladys P. Flum Award To The Outstanding Mathematics Student This award was established in recognition of Arthur E. Flum who taught mathematics at Chaffey for 38 years. During that time, he served as Chair of the Physical Science Division and head of the Mathematics Department. His enthusiasm for living and genuine concern for his students gave encouragement to all who knew him. Mrs. Flum supported Mr. Flum's many college activities, such as coaching the tennis team, and sponsoring the Engineers' Club and the Chaffey College Boosters. Over the years she welcomed hundreds of students into their home for evenings of fun or special breakfasts before spring field trips. Mrs. Flum shared Mr. Flum's pride in the hard-working math students. This award is presented to students who, in the judgment of the mathematics faculty, are the top math students of the year. Steven Allbee Steven is transferring to UC Riverside in the fall as a mathematics major and plans to eventually get his Ph.D. in mathematics. Paul Pearce Congratulations to Paul for his second award. Elmer F. Glenn Freshman Mathematics Award This award was established in memory of Elmer F. Glenn, an instructor of mathematics and statistics from September 1947 through June 1975. During his 28 years of college service, he was actively involved in both college and community committees and organizations. Innovative in the classroom, highly respected by students and colleagues, this teacher was truly an educator. This scholarship is awarded to the outstanding freshman calculus student as determined by the Mathematics faculty. Christian Griset Christian plans on further study of mathematics and physics and hopes to obtain a doctorate in either subject. Fernando Navarro Fernando will attend Cal Poly Pomona this fall to continue working toward his goal of becoming an electrical engineer

Richard M. Beeks AwardThe Biology Department faculty offer this award only when they believe that there are truly outstanding students who have had an inspirational effect on the staff and other students in the Department. Dr. Richard Beeks, who chaired this department for some 25 years, inspired us all by his creative leadership and high standards of scholarship. The recipients’ names will be placed on a perpetual plaque displayed in the Life Sciences Office. Cynthia Torres Cynthia has recently been accepted into Cal Poly Pomona’s Biology program, and plans to attend there in the fall.

Life Science Awards Each year, the faculty of the life sciences chooses an outstanding student scholar in biology, zoology, and/or botany who has displayed the highest academic achievement. The student receives a gift from the faculty and his/her name is added to the perpetual plaque located in the Life Science Office. Judallah Mustafa Judallah has a passion towards biology and medicine, as well as learning languages. He speaks Arabic, English, Spanish, and French. This summer he will take ASL, then Chinese, Korean, and so on. He has a dream of serving as a “Doctor without Borders” after becoming a cardiologist. Judallah is very modest about his accomplishments. He says he is “just a student at Chaffey, honored to be learning from the best of the best, … with big dreams!"

Parcel Award for Geology Rod Parcel taught geology at Chaffey College from January 1973, until his death in March 1991. Rod loved teaching (it was his career goal) and the mentoring relationships he established with his students. Although he also taught chemistry, his passion was geology. Sharing his knowledge of and respect for the Earth, its structures, and forces with thousands of students, his enthusiasm, curiosity and quest for understanding inspired them in the classroom, laboratory, and in the field. This award has been established to honor the excellence of his teaching and to remember his life and love of geology.Nicholas Possnack Nicholas says he is still undecided on his goals in school, but is leaning towards Physics and Geology. Suzanne Colquitt Suzanne is currently working on undergraduate studies, planning on transferring to UC Davis to major in Geology and Avian Science. Her special interests include hand-raising exotic birds and bird watching. |
