Kevin Love |
Jack White Engineering Physics Award This award was established to honor Jack White who taught physics at Chaffey College for thirty-eight years. During that time he also taught mathematics, geology, and chemistry, served for five years as the Assistant Superintendent for Business for both Chaffey College and Chaffey High School, and served as the Faculty Senate President for one year. Jack’s activities were not limited to the classroom. He was assistant football coach for twelve years and head wrestling coach for fourteen years. In April of 1996, Jack was inducted into the Chaffey College Hall of Fame. Jack served his country as a Navy Commander, flying in the Pacific in World War II. He was a naval reservist for thirty years. He is an outdoor pistol NRA Master target shooter. His hobbies include piloting sail planes and hiking. He has climbed Mt. Whitney three times. This award is presented to the top second-year student in the calculus-based physics sequence for scientists and engineers. Kevin Love Kevin is a physics major transferring to UCR.

Freshman Chemistry Achievement Award Chaffey College annually awards a hardbound copy of the CRC Handbook of Chemistry and Physics to the outstanding freshman chemistry student. Jenna Becker Jenna is very passionate about health & nutrition as well as helping others, and her life experiences have driven that passion. She is also very eager to continue my nutritional education and look forward to becoming a Registered Dietician from Cal Poly Pomona. Chaffey College has been an excellent school in giving her a foundation to build her education off of. As a very dedicated and caring individual, she feels she can put these characteristics toward helping others in the nutrition field.

Outstanding Student Of Chemistry The faculty of the Chemistry Department annually chooses the outstanding chemistry student. Physical Sciences faculty have donated the funds for this award as encouragement to their students to continue their excellent achievements. Tim Reynolds Tim plans to transfer to UCR and beyond to further his studies in his major, chemistry, and hi minor, Chinese. His eventual desire is to mix language and chemistry and work internationally

Ella Mae and Lawrence R. Quarles Physical Science Achievement Award This award is given to honor the parents of a former staff member. In 1927, Mrs. Quarles was the first woman admitted to the Engineering School of the University of Virginia. She began a chemical engineering major, earned her BA in Science Education and taught chemistry in high school. Her husband, Dr. Quarles held the record for the highest grade point average earned by an undergraduate at the University of Virginia, School of Engineering for over 40 years. He earned his Ph.D. in Physics, was a professor of electrical, electronic, and nuclear engineering, and was Dean of the University of Virginia School of Engineering for 18 years. Kevin Love Kevin is a physics major transferring to UCR.

Mitchell White |
Rodney Arner Pre-Calculus Scholarship Professor Rodney Arner, after completing a Masters’ Degree in Mathematics from UC Berkeley and service in the US Army Air Corps as meteorologist/air controller, taught Mathematics and Surveying at Chaffey from 1948 to 1986. During his tenure, he served on numerous committees and assignments including President of the Faculty Senate and Chair of the Physical Science Division. Always a popular teacher with students and a well-respected colleague amongst Chaffey faculty and staff, Mr. Arner was honored with the Chaffey Meritorious Service award shortly after his retirement. Involved in curriculum and course development his entire career, he initiated and taught Chaffey’s PreCalculus course and wrote and published the textbook Preparation for Calculus. |

Dr. Robert Lubarsky Memorial Scholarship Dr. Robert Lubarsky was an instructor of biology for many years. Dr. Lubarsky died very suddenly and unexpectedly in August, 1974. His many friends, students and staff alike, have built a scholarship fund that supports this award. The award is given to a student who has completed a course in microbiology, one of Dr. Lubarsky’s specialties. Recipients of this award have demonstrated achievement and an unselfish willingness and ability to help others. Of this scholarship, Dr. Richard Beeks, former Chair of the Life Science Division, said, “In a very small way, we hope to perpetuate his image in developing students.” Sira Palerm Returning to an academic life after 9 years of taking time off to work and raise a family, has been an exhilarating and rewarding experience for Sira. She is enjoying school much more the second time around, even though her time is much more restricted, and responsibilities greater.

Ray Belnap Memorial Scholarship This scholarship is given to honor a great humanitarian and a devoted mentor whose life served as an excellent model for many people. Ricardo Sayegh Ricardo is interested in the study of research of neuroscience. He was chosen as one of the ten participants nationwide for an NSF/REU summer internship at UCR. In Fall 2005 he will start my major in neuroscience at a UC system where he is planning to strengthen his research skills. He loves volunteering and is a current volunteer in the E.R. at Loma Linda University Medical Center.

Robert Adams Case Memorial Scholarship The Chaffey College Engineering Club has established this scholarship in memory of Robert Adams Case, an Engineering Club member and leader, who was taken by death during his attendance at Chaffey College. This is a perpetual scholarship of which the recipient is selected by the Engineering Club members and advisor. The award goes to an active member of the club. Shahzad Mohammadi Achievements at Chaffey College – Graduating honors; president of engineering club 04/05; member Phi Theta Kappa; graduating w/AA & AS in May; Transferring to university coming fall.

Arthur E. & Gladys P. Flum Award To The Outstanding Mathematics Student This award was established in recognition of Arthur E. Flum who taught mathematics at Chaffey for 38 years. During that time, he served as Chair of the Physical Science Division and head of the Mathematics Department. His enthusiasm for living and genuine concern for his students gave encouragement to all who knew him. Mrs. Flum supported Mr. Flum's many college activities, such as coaching the tennis team, and sponsoring the Engineers' Club and the Chaffey College Boosters. Over the years she welcomed hundreds of students into their home for evenings of fun or special breakfasts before spring field trips. Mrs. Flum shared Mr. Flum's pride in the hard-working math students. This award is presented to students who, in the judgment of the mathematics faculty, are the top math students of the year. Edmon Salcedo Edmon is currently attending Cal Poly Pomona pursuing a B.S. in Electrical Engineering. Morgan Brown Morgan is interested in physics, soccer, and philosophy. He plans to attend US San Diego, major in physics, and become a professor at a university or community college. |

Elmer F. Glenn Freshman Mathematics Award This award was established in memory of Elmer F. Glenn, an instructor of mathematics and statistics from September 1947 through June 1975. During his 28 years of college service, he was actively involved in both college and community committees and organizations. Innovative in the classroom, highly respected by students and colleagues, this teacher was truly an educator. This scholarship is awarded to the outstanding freshman calculus student as determined by the Mathematics faculty. Paul Pearce Paul is a computer science major, considering a minor in math. His plans after Chaffey are to transfer to a UC, hopefully UCB if he can maintain my GPA. After college, he hopes to start his own software firm.

Richard M. Beeks AwardThe Biology Department faculty offer this award only when they believe that there are truly outstanding students who have had an inspirational effect on the staff and other students in the Department. Dr. Richard Beeks, who chaired this department for some 25 years, inspired us all by his creative leadership and high standards of scholarship. The recipients’ names will be placed on a perpetual plaque displayed in the Life Sciences Office. Jennifer Boyd Jenifer is looking forward to a career in veterinary medicine, or a career involving animals in general. Science is her future and she thinks she is off to a good start here at Chaffey College.

Life Science Awards Each year, the faculty of the life sciences chooses an outstanding student scholar in biology, zoology, and/or botany who has displayed the highest academic achievement. The student receives a gift from the faculty and his/her name is added to the perpetual plaque located in the Life Science Office. Anthony Scoby Anthony is currently unsure about his future transfer plans, but he does eventually intend on graduating, attending medical school, and becoming a successful trauma surgeon.

Parcel Award for Geology Rod Parcel taught geology at Chaffey College from January 1973, until his death in March 1991. Rod loved teaching (it was his career goal) and the mentoring relationships he established with his students. Although he also taught chemistry, his passion was geology. Sharing his knowledge of and respect for the Earth, its structures, and forces with thousands of students, his enthusiasm, curiosity and quest for understanding inspired them in the classroom, laboratory, and in the field. This award has been established to honor the excellence of his teaching and to remember his life and love of geology.Suzanne Phillips A year ago Suzanne moved to Rancho Cucamonga and started to take the steps necessary to making her life long dream a reality, to become a Marine Biologist with 2nd major in Geology. The work involved is so rewarding and the knowledge that she has accumulated already has been the most worthwhile, enjoyable time of her academic life. Grant Welton Grant has always had an interest in the area of science. HIs educational path seems to lie in this field. He is planning to go into the Chiropractic profession. He extremely values his time here at Chaffey College and his association with the science department.
