View of the microfilm cabinets and machines

The microfilm cabinets and machines are located in the east wing of the Library on the first floor, close to the Copier Room.

In order to save space and to preserve text printed on old, brittle paper, it is common practice to photograph and reproduce those materials onto small rolls of microfilm. The library's microfilm collection is stored in the cabinets shown on the right side of the above picture.

To view these materials, the selected roll of film must be loaded onto the microfilm reader shown on the left of the picture. Do not be afraid to ask for help at the Reference Desk if you are having trouble loading the reel.

You may print from the microfilm readers for ten cents per page. The machines only take dimes. (The staff at the Circulation Desk can change bills or other coins for dimes).

If you have problems printing, contact a librarian immediately.

The microfilm collection includes:

  • Look Magazine, 1937-1971
  • The Los Angeles Times, 1972-1993
  • The New York Times, 1851-1995
  • Newsweek, 1949-present
  • The Pennsylvania Gazette, 1728-1789
  • The Saturday Evening Post, 1950-1983
  • Time Magazine, 1923-present
  • US News & World Report, 1996-present
  • The Virginia Gazette, 1736-1780
