![]() Course Schedules Spring 2008 EDUCATION COURSES ED-10 Introduction to Education and Teaching 3.00 UNITS Limitation on Enrollment: Proof of a negative TB test within past 24 months is required. 30 hours of field experience in a K-12 classroom is required outside of class meeting times, with placements made by the instructor, and written reflections and structured observations required. Advisory: Eligibility for ENGL-1A as determined by the Chaffey assessment process, or completion of ENGL-450 or ESL-450; and completion of MATH-410 Introductory course exploring opportunities in the teaching profession including clarification of credentialing requirements. Through weekly class meetings and structured observation and experience in a diverse K-12 classroom, students will be introduced to California Standards for the teaching profession, teacher performance expectations and K-12 curriculum standards. Students will be guided to reflect upon lesson design, classroom management skills and teaching strategies observed during their time spent working with a credentialed teacher. Examination of personal motivations for teaching, grade level preference and legislature that currently affects education are also included. Materials Fee: $3.00 Transfer credit: CSU; UC
ED-12 Introduction to Education and Teaching II 3.00 UNITS Limitation on Enrollment: Proof of a negative TB test within past 12 months is required. Fingerprinting may also be required for fieldwork placement. Prerequisite: ED-10. Overview of the philosophical and historical foundations of education in America, effective teaching practices, and challenges of the diverse public school environment. Topics include: literacy, learning styles, special populations, assessment, legal and ethical guidelines for teachers, and applied use of technology as a resource for professional development. Students gain experience in diverse public school settings by performing 15 hours of tutoring in a K-12 classroom. The tutoring is in addition to the regular class meetings; arranged placements are made by the Gateways to Teaching coordinator. Materials Fee: $3.00 Transfer credit: CSU; UC credit pending
ED-400 Exploring Careers in Education 3.00 UNITS Advisory: Eligibility for English 450 or English as a Second Language 450 as determined by the Chaffey assessment process, or completion of English 550 or English as a Second Language 567. Exploration of career opportunities in an educational environment. Topics include: available educational careers; economic, education, and personality considerations in career choice; personal and student learning styles; multiculturalism; and uses of technology in the classroom. MATH-4 Mathematical Concepts for Elementary School Teachers 4 units Prerequisite: Eligibility for MATH-4 as determined by the Chaffey assessment process, or completion of MATH-420. Study of mathematical concepts, targeted primarily to students preparing to teach elementary school mathematics. Topics include: real number systems and subsystems, patterns and sequences, basic set theory, logic, and mathematical induction. Emphasis is on comprehension of concepts and application of logical reasoning and critical analysis in problem-solving. Materials Fee: $4.00 Transfer Credit: CSU; UC
PHSCI-10 Survey of Chemistry and Physics 4.00 UNITS Prerequisite: Eligibility for MATH-420 as determined by the Chaffey assessment process, or completion of MATH-410. Introduction to the principles of physics and chemistry. Topics include: motion, forms of energy, electricity, magnetism, waves, electromagnetic radiation, atomic structure, bonding, phases of matter, pH and nuclear chemistry, acids and bases, and solutions.
