California Dream Act

California Dream Act of 2011 Updates (AB 131)

What is the California Dream Act?

The California Dream Act is an opportunity for AB-540 students to apply for and receive several different types of financial aid, including:

  • Board of Governors (BOG) fee waivers (as of Spring 2013)
  • State financial aid, such as Cal Grants and Chafee Grants (as of Fall 2013)
  • Assistance from EOPS, CARE or CalWorks
  • Privately-funded scholarships
  •

What is an AB-540 student?

You are an AB-540 student and exempt from paying non-resident enrollment fees, if you meet ALL of the following criteria:

  • Attended a California High School for at least three years;
  • Graduated from a California High School, got a GED or passed the California High School Proficiency Exam;
  • Are registered or enrolled at a California Community College;
    AND
  • If required, complete an affidavit saying you have filed (or will file when you are eligible to do so) for legal immigration status.

    The Dream Act Application is now available for completion at http://www.caldreamact.org The application is very similar to the FAFSA and will require student and/or parent income information.  The Dream Application does not automatically make a student eligible for State aid; students must meet all other required eligibility requirements.

    Once you have applied, the Financial Aid Office will receive your application information and will notify you by email regarding the status of your application.

    Students who ARE eligible to complete the FAFSA should NOT complete the California Dream Act Application.

    Please note that eligibility for the Board of Governor's Fee Waiver (BOG) is additionally conformed through completion of an eligibility affidavit and review of official high school transcripts. In order for any eligibility for the BOGW Fee Waiver to be determined, students will need to submit their official high school transcripts to the Admissions & Records Office.

    For more information on the Dream Act and/or AB 131, please visit www.csac.ca.gov and click on the "Cal Dream Act" button.

    Please contact your college Admissions Office to determine if you are AB-540 eligible.
