Program Description This program is designed as an interdisciplinary area of inquiry with a foundation in traditional rhetoric and contemporary social-scientific theories of human communication. The program is suited to the needs of both two-year students and students who wish to transfer with a major or minor in Communication Studies or related fields. The curriculum is intended for students who wish to develop a fundamental understanding and knowledge of the functions of communication in their daily life and in the fabric of society. A series of core courses is designed to provide students with the background needed to explore any of several fields in depth. Currently, these areas are public and mass communication, leadership and group communication, intercultural communication, and interpersonal/gender communication. We also offer a course in oral interpretation and maintain the Chaffey College forensics team program. Courses are offered in both day and evening format and at both Rancho Cucamonga and satellite campus locations. | Career Opportunities Communication skills frequently top the list of skills that employers desire in employees. In a recent survey of 4,000 human resource professionals, 71% of them listed communication skills as critical to successful job performance. Additionally, a survey of the top Fortune 500 companies indicated that strong communication skills were the most important skills in job effectiveness. Furthermore, 50% of these same companies indicated that job applicants were lacking in communication skills. Therefore, acquiring communication skills can give a job applicant a competitive edge in today's tight job market. A question frequently asked is, "What can I do with a degree in Communication Studies?" Many graduates of Communication Studies programs are employed in industries as diverse as education, criminal justice, small businesses (as owners!), retail, information services/technology, religion, government, military, politics, and broadcasting, to name a few. The positions these graduates hold are as diverse as the industries in which they are employed. Graduates find themselves employed as teachers, sales and marketing representatives, managers, lawyers, police officers, human resources professionals, consultants, counselors, public relations specialists, recruiters, fundraisers, mediators, and speech writers, to name a few. In short, since graduates of Communication Studies programs learn valuable communication skills, they are attractive to employers in a wide range of industries, for a wide range of positions. Therefore, a better question to ask is, "What can't I do with a degree in communication studies?" |
