Physical Education


Courses

Physical Education courses are divided into four general categories of courses: Activity, Adaptive, Lecture, and Athletic.



Activity Courses


Beginning Tennis
Rules, Court etiquette, history and fundamental skills

Advanced Tennis
Rules, Court etiquette, history and fundamental skills

Badminton
Rules, etiquette, history, and fundamental skills

Beginning Golf
Basic skills and course etiquette

Swimming
Swimming skills.  Several different strokes are taught according to skill level

Springboard Diving
Basic techniques in dry-land training, board work, and entries into the water.  Emphasis on required dives.

Bowling
Basic skills, rules, and etiquette

Archery
Basic skills, rules, and etiquette

Volleyball
Rules, court etiquette, history, and basic skills

Advanced Volleyball
Advanced skills, techniques, and information to use in offense and defense patterns

Basketball
Rules, court etiquette, basic offensive and defensive positions, and basic passing and dribbling techniques

Soccer
Kicks, dribbles, passes, ball control, and patterns of play

Body Building (Weight Lifting)
Safety and proper use of body-building equipment and how to perform the drills and exercises necessary for proper toning and conditioning o f the body

Low Impact Aerobics
High energy, low impact, aerobic exercises, good posture, proper warm-ups and cool-down, strength, flexibility, and endurance exercise.  Designed for beginning students of body conditioning

Walking for Fitness
Designed for men and women of all ages and is concerned with cardiovascular health, fitness, and weight control

Body Conditioning
Methods of evaluation of total body fitness.  Develops strength and flexibility of the body and sets up goals.  Body mechanics in everyday activities

Yoga
Breath, postures, and relaxation techniques to improve heath and fitness levels of the mind and body.  Emphasis on gaining flexibility, muscle strength, endurance, and coordination through the physical postures.  Relaxation techniques incorporated for stress reduction and mental calm

Introduction to Self-Defense and Personal Safety
Beginning and foundation course in personal safety.  Basic karate techniques for self-defense.  Material covers safety and defense in a technical and practical framework.  Focus on normal life and violence in society

Karate and Athletic Conditioning
Skill development, coordination, strength and mobility in basic karate technique with application of athletic conditioning and training methodology

Adaptive Courses


Self Defense
Personal safety including awareness, assessment and action in self defense. Physical skills required to improve physical fitness level

Wheelchair Basketball
Prepares students to complete  in the sport of wheelchair basketball using national and international wheelchair basketball rules

Racquetball
Prepares students with disabilities to learn the basic skills in the sport of racquetball using  adapted rues and specialized equipment

Golf
Prepares students with disabilities to learn golf and in some cases  be retrained to participate in this sport.  emphasis on specialized adapted equipment and compensatory instructional strategies

Archery
Prepares students with disabilities to learn archery using specialized adapted equipment and compensatory techniques

Wheelchair Tennis
Prepares students with disabilities to compete in the sport of tennis using rules adapted for physical limitations

Body Building
Weight training to improve muscle to fat ratio. Body composition assessments will evaluate progress

Body Conditioning
Physical fitness cardiorespiratory conditioning. Muscles strength and endurance and flexibility. Individualized exercise prescriptions safety. and appropriate use of adapted fitness equipment

Aquatics
Improve the range of motion of joints and cardiorespiratory fitness for students with disabilities. Class is held in a four foot deep hated pool. A chair lift provides easy transfer

Bowling
Prepares students with disabilities to participate compete in the sport of bowling. Specialized equipment to compensate for physical limitations if necessary

Weights and Football Team Courses
Hours for team activities classes: Physical background and proper use of weight-lifting equipment.  As an adjunct to the course, sports (according to availability of facilities) are offered to provide diversity and completeness in this physical education package.  May be taken four times for credit

Volleyball Team Activities, Women
Designed for women interested in learning competitive volleyball and joining the women's intercollegiate team

Basketball Team Activities, Women
History, rules, and fundamental skills needed for competitive women's basketball

Softball Team Activity, Women
Overall development of skills and knowledge needed  for competitive softball play

Water Polo Team Activity
Rules, etiquette, history, and advances skills of water polo designed for prospective water polo team participant

Basketball Team Activity, Men
Designed for men interested in playing competitive varsity basketball at the intercollegiate level

Baseball Team Activity, Men
Designed for men interested in playing competitive baseball at the college level

Track Team Activity, Men and Women
Specific experience in track and field.  Emphasis of fundamental theory and skills

Tennis Team Activity, Men and Women
Basic tennis rules and stroke skills for competitive playing

Competitive Stoke, Swimming Team Activity, Men and Women
The four basic competitive swimming strokes

Football Team Class
Information and practice to develop basic skills and techniques.  For students who wish to compete in the interscholastic sport of football but is open to all

Introduction to Physical Education
A guide to students in making a choice whether or not they want physical education as their chosen field of study

Introduction to Athletic Training
Principles and knowledge necessary to provide fundamental health care for athletics for those not directly involved with sport medicine. Supplements first aid background while stressing a preventive approach

Adaptive Wellness and Fitness
Introduces students with disabilities to all the major topics of wellness. Development of individualized assessment and wellness plans

Introduction to Physical Fitness and Wellness
Theoretical and physical aspects of physical fitness and wellness for the development of a complete lifetime wellness fitness program

First Aid
Analysis  of the theories, practices, and practical applications stressed in the emergency care of the sick and injured prior to authorized medical attention. Meets the American red Cross requirement for certification

Advanced First Aid and Emergency Response
Designed primarily for the person responsible for the emergency care of the sick and injured. I t will  prepare the participant to make appropriate decisions about care to provide in an emergency, to help sustain life, reduce pain and minimize the consequence of injury or sudden illness until more advanced medical help can arrive. The course meets American Red Cross certificate standards and includes CPR certification

Water Safety Instructors Course
Designed primarily for special-interest groups responsible for teaching life saving and water safety and all levels of swimming skills. Information and practice to develop functional teaching skills required by cities, counties, and states for all waterfront programs.  Safety consciousness, accident prevention, rescue and all aquatic skills.  Meets the American Red Cross Requirements for certification

Theory of Aerobic/Fitness Instruction
Theory and skills necessary designed to instruct a safe and effective aerobic fitness program.  Basic anatomy and physiology, kinesiology, and injury prevention

Football Film Analysis
Comprehensive film review of football techniques by football coaches.  For physical education majors who want to coach football.  Films reviewed from four-year colleges, community colleges, and high schools. May be taken two times for credit

Theory and Practice of Officiating Team Sports
Study of the principles of officiating in team sports, including interpretation of rules and analysis of good mechanics of officiating.  Brief history and research of the sport to seek aides to better officiating

Professional Activities Coaching Team Sport
Information and experience for prospective players, coaches and teachers.  Introduction to the physical, mental, and emotional aspects of playing and coaching competitive sports

Lifequarding
Designed primarily for special-interest groups responsible for preventing water accidents and making water rescues.  Information and practice to develop functional water rescues and accident prevention required by lifeguard crews.  Meets the American Red Cross requirements for certification and includes certification in First Aid and CPR

Diet and Fitness
A life style approach to fitness including the study of nutrition, prevention, increased cardiovascular endurance, proper weight control, increased strength, flexibility, stress management, and considerations of aging on the body

Sports Education and Athletic Orientation to College
In-depth analysis of personal, professional, and academic issues relative to achievement potentials for student-athlete's knowledge of NCAA regulations, athletic program requirements as well as proficiency and retention in college.  Learning styles, study techniques, motivation, library usage, and college programs and services.  Introduction to the variety of segments of higher education in California.  Instruction and assignments designed to meet the needs of students from diverse cultures and backgrounds
