In 2001-02 Chaffey went on a 13 game winning streak and rose to #2 in the State and #1 in the Southern California Coaches Poll. The Panthers concluded Klein’s first campaign with a 25-8 record. In year two, 2002-03, the Panthers finished 27-8 and 11-3, first in the Foothill Conference. The 2002-03 season was highlighted with all five Chaffey sophomores moving on to attend four-year universities. In 2003-04, the Panthers finished 18-11 and 11-3 in the Foothill Conference. Chaffey was plagued by pre-season injuries to star players Jason Harris and Sheldon Pace. The Panthers were resilient and wound up being the number one scoring team in the south (94 ppg) and winning their second consecutive Foothill Conference title. The 2004-05 Panthers became the third consecutive Chaffey team to lead the South in scoring. The team finished with a 21-9 overall record and a respectable 10-4 Conference mark. The team averaged 99.0 ppg in the Foothill Conference and beat a favored Long Beach City team on the road 120-102 in the playoffs. The team ended the season as part of the “Elite 8” against a very formidable Saddleback squad. Haron Hargrave (Sacramento State) and Victor Michel made first team Foothill Conference. The 2005 -06 “CHP” were a special team. They won the Foothill Conference outright with a 13–1 and 28–6 overall record. The Panthers led the state in scoring at 103 ppg. The team received their highest playoff seeding (#3) in the past five seasons. Chaffey was led by Conference MVP and 1st team all state selection TJ Smith. The squad had seven players move on to four year universities TJ Smith – Kentucky Wesleyan, Vince Alvarado – Hawaii Hilo, Jason McClure and Ronnie Bullock – Dickinson State, Larry Dew – Mayville State, Mike Moreno – University of Laverne, and Carroll Wheatley – Minnesota Crookston. The 2006 -07 Panthers were a very talented and deep team. Their overall record was 28-7 and 12 – 2 in Conference. The squad finished in second place in the Foothill Conference. The team entered the playoffs as the # 4 seed in Southern California and played a tough Compton squad in the first round of the playoffs. The “CHP” beat Compton by 15 earlier in the season, but Compton got revenge and beat the Panthers in the playoffs. Leading performers for the Panthers were Jamar Berry (Chaminade), Bobby Kovach (Culver-Stockton), Brandon Price (Hawaii Hilo), Michael Strawberry (Alburquerque – D-League), Alwyn Jordan (Southwestern, KS). Last season the “CHP” finished 17-13 and 7-7 in the tough Foothill Conference. The “CHP” moved three players to four year universities: Brandon Price (Hawaii-Hilo), Brandon Clemons (Southwest Baptist), Stephen Richardson (Bacone College) and Jeff Sawyerr (Bloomfield College). Coach Klein, at age 23, became the youngest head coach in Southern California when he took the job at South Pasadena High School. Before coming to Chaffey, Klein concluded a dramatic season at Upland High School where he coached the Highlanders to a CIF Division 1-AAA title in 2001. Under his direction, the Highlanders ranked in the Top 10 nationally and won 28 games in a row. During his nine seasons at Upland, Klein led the team to three league titles and made the CIF playoffs every year starting in 1995. Klein has earned top honors in coaching being named “Coach of the Year” by the Southern California Interscholastic Basketball Coaches Association (SCIBCA), Fox Sports West 2 television, the Inland Valley Daily Bulletin, and the Los Angeles Times. He was also honored as the “Teacher of the Year” in 1996 from Upland High School. Over the years Coach Klein has guided many of his players to the college and professional ranks. Klein graduated from Lawrence High School on Long Island, New York, where he was All- County athlete in football, basketball, and track. A graduate of S.U.N.Y. at Cortland, Jeff earned his B.S. degree in Physical Education in 1985. In 1989, Jeff completed his M.B.A. from the University of La Verne. Klein has hosted a very successful 50-50 basketball camp in
which he has influenced many young athletes in the
fundamentals of basketball. In his free time Klein enjoys
spending time with his two children Danny (16) and Amanda
