3/10/09 MEN'S BASKETBALL FALLS TO SADDLEBACK IN FINAL SECONDS OF ROUND 3 PLAYOFF GAME
by DRINCA - SF T.J. Lipold’s 3-pointer with 14.0 seconds left broke a 60-60 tie and lifted #1-seed Saddleback (27-7) to a 63-61 win over #8-seed Chaffey (27-7) Saturday night in the regional final, lifting the Gauchos to the state tournament. Lipold’s big shot came the end of the shot clock from about 24 feet out. Chaffey had tied the game at 60 on a free throw by PF Anthony Soares with 49 seconds left. Saddleback then held the ball on offense before calling timeout with 9 seconds left on the shot clock. On the restart, the ball went to Orange Empire Conference MVP SG Franklin Session, but the Chaffey defense converged on him, forcing him to pass the ball away. The ball went to Lipold, who calmly drained the 3-pointer to give his team a 63-60 lead. And after that, Lipold wasn’t quite finished making big plays. Chaffey got the ball to SF Winston Robinson, but Lipold fouled him before Robinson could attempt a potential game-tying 3-point shot. Robinson then made the first free throw to make it 63-61 with 4.9 seconds left. He missed the second intentionally, but stepped over the foul line trying for the rebound and that violation gave Saddleback the ball out of bounds. After a Chaffey timeout, Saddleback got the ball to Lipold, who instead of catching the inbounds pass pushed it further ahead into the frontcourt, allowing time to expire. It was a dramatic ending to a tense game. Both teams played a slow, playoff-type pace, with Chaffey only occasionally using its famous pressure game. And for much of the game, that seemed to play into the hands of Saddleback, which took a 14-point lead early in the second half. But the Panthers rallied from that deficit, taking a 55-53 lead with 6:27 remaining, and the lead went back and forth the rest of the way until Lipold’s game-winning shot. In the first half, Saddleback jumped out to a 27-16 lead midway through the half and led by 7 points, 35-28, at the break. That was largely because of the scoring of PF Kevin Menner, who had 16 of his game-high 26 points in the first half. Chaffey cut the margin to just 3 late in the half and had the chance to tie it at 29, but SG Anthony Cammon’s 3-point try missed badly. Then Session scored on a putback of his own miss and SF Terrell Mack made a pair of free throws to make it 33-26. Mack and Robinson then traded baskets in the final minute-plus to make it 35-28 at the break. When the second half began, Saddleback came out ready, scoring the first 7 points of the half to push its lead to 14. Two free throws by Menner followed by a 3-pointer and a short pullup jumper by Session made it 42-28. Chaffey cut the lead to 6 at 46-40 a few minutes later, but then Saddleback again pushed its lead back to double figures and led by 10 at 53-43 after a 3-pointer by Lipold with just under 10 minutes left. But then Chaffey went on a 12-0 run, not only erasing the deficit but taking a 55-53 lead on a 3-pointer by PG Lamar Williams with 6:27 left. PG Jamal Sloan had begun the run with a conventional 3-point play with 9:32 left, and the Chaffey defense held Saddleback scoreless for more than three minutes, allowing the Panthers to take the lead. After that, the lead went back and forth several times. Saddleback tied it on a leaner by Mack with 6:05 left that made it 55-55. A free throw by Williams put Chaffey back in front, 56-55 with 5:54 left, but then Menner scored for Saddleback to put the Gauchos in front, 57-56 with 4:50 remaining. Then neither team scored for more than three minutes until Mack made one of two free throws with 1:49 left to make it 58-56. Just 20 seconds later, Robinson gave Chaffey a 59-58 lead with a FG+FT 3-point play. But Menner answered for Saddleback with a basket and drew a foul with 1:13 left. He missed the free throw, leaving Saddleback just a point ahead, and Chaffey tied it with 49 seconds left when Soares made one of two free throws to make it 60-60. Then came Lipold’s dramatic Paxson-like shot. John Paxson hit the go-ahead shot in the 1993 NBA Finals after a pass from an MVP winner wearing #23, just as Lipold did in this game to vault Saddleback into the state tournament. Lipold, son of Saddleback Athletic Director Tony Lipold, made his last 3 shots of the game after missing his first 5 and finished with 8 points. Menner led all scorers with his 26 points, and also had 8 rebounds. Mack and SG Marquis Green each came off the bench to score 10 points for the Gauchos. Green went 4-for-4 in the first half for his 10 points. Session had just 7 points on 3-of-13 from the floor but had 12 rebounds, 2 blocks, 2 steals and a game-high 6 assists, one of which came on the game-winning shot. Remarkably, Saddleback had just 6 turnovers in the game and actually attempted more field goals than Chaffey, 64-54. For Chaffey, SF Nickalas Turner led the way with 18 pts, including a pair of threes, and 8 rebs. Williams had 14 pts and Robinson had 12 pts plus 8 rebs. But overall Chaffey shot just 35% from the floor with 6 threes, and as a sign of how disrupted the Panther offense was, Chaffey totaled just 7 assists on its 19 baskets.

On Day 2, the Panthers took down Cuesta 79-73 for the 8th game that the CHP was able to hold an opponent to less than 75 points. Against Cypress, the CHP once again fell behind at the start but fought back to lead at the 1/2 47-42. The Panthers led for the remainder of the game, winning 97-85. The “CHP” open up against Glendale at 1:00 pm. Ctr Mark Dorsey, the 11th and last player to enter the game for the Owls, made 8 of 12 shots from the floor for a game-high 18 pts and grabbed 6 rebs to help the home team to the win a day after being upset by #18 (North) Reedley in the semifinal. Chaffey, which like Citrus entered the tourney undefeated, was relegated to the third-place game after losing to #12 San Diego City. Citrus jumped out to a 24-14 lead in the first 10 minutes, and led by as much as 15 late in the first half before Chaffey got a pair of threes from PG Lamar Williams and cut the margin to 9 at the break, 46-37. And Chaffey continued its surge in the second half, tying the game at 56 with just under 14 minutes left. Citrus went back into the lead after that, but Chaffey stayed close and eventually took its first lead since the early moments of the game at 66-65 on another 3-pointer by Williams. The Panthers led by as many as 5 points at 78-73 with just under 4 minutes left. But then Citrus rallied, taking an 82-80 lead on a 3-pointer by SF Jose Rivera with 2:26 left. Chaffey answered with a driving lay-up by SG Anthony Cammon to tie the game. Then Dorsey scored on a dish from Rivera to put the Owls back in front. But Chaffey answered that when SF Winston Robinson scored on a putback of his own miss to make it 84-84. But after that, Citrus took command of the game. PG Steven Bennett missed on a driving lay-up, but got an "Iverson assist" as he drew the Chaffey defense to him and managed to get the ball onto the basket. Gibbs swallowed up the rebound and slammed it back through to give Citrus an 86-84 lead. Then after a Chaffey miss, Dorsey drew a loose ball foul and made a pair of free throws with 28 seconds left to make it 88-84. Then Chaffey SF Nick Turner missed a 3-pointer and PF Troy Payne grabbed the rebound and passed to SG Justin Johnson, who made a pair of free throws with 7 seconds left to make it 90-84 and seal the win for Citrus. Besides Dorsey, double-digit scorers for Citrus were J. Johnson (14 pts), SF Curtis Eatmon (12 pts), PF Keith Thompson (10 pts, 8 rebs), Bennett (10 pts, 3 asts, 3 steals) and Rivera (10 pts). J. Cypress led the entire first half. They entered the locker room up 48 – 45. The Panthers press slowly wore down the Chargers. The CHP held a 85 – 81 lead with 25 seconds in regulation. Cypress missed a shot which fell into the hands of Chaffey point guard Lamar Williams. Williams falling out of bounds attempted a pass that went out of bounds under the Chaffey basket. Cypress quickly scored with 10 seconds left and fouled Andre Perkins. Perkins made one of two free throws to up the lead to 86 -83 with 5.5 seconds left in the contest. Austin Tim then received the in bounce pass and advanced the ball close to mid- court and launched a bank shot that went in at the buzzer to tie the score to send the game into overtime. The first OT was all Cypress. Chaffey was down by 5 with 2 minutes to go. An Anthony Cammon three pointer and a Lamar Williams offensive rebound put back tied the score 93-93 with 30 seconds to play. Chaffey went down early but fought back in the second OT. A Winston Robinson lay up put the Panthers up by 4 with 50 seconds to play. Cypress made a bucket with 12 seconds remaining to cut the lead to 106 – 104. The Chargers fouled Nick Turner with 2 seconds remaining. 11/12/08 The Chaffey Hustlin' Panthers fell behind the Reedley Tigers 26 - 20 at halftime. That would be the biggest lead of the game for Reedley. The Panthers opened the half on a 6 - 0 run to tie the game. Both teams traded baskets throughout the second half. The lead changed numerous times. The "CHP" seemed to take control having a 46 -40 lead with 6 minutes remaining only to see the lead evaporate. Reedley took the lead a final time 49 -48 with under 3:00 minutes to play in regulation. Down the stretch Jamal Sloan hit a big three to put the Panthers up 56-54. A Mauricio Aldaba layup put the CHP up by 4 with 30 seconds to play. All State point guard Marquel Hoskins then hit two big free throws for Reedley cutting the deficit to 2 with 15 seconds left to play. Jamal Sloan was fouled sinking 1 of 2 free throws allowing Reedley one more chance. The Tigers then hit a long range three at the buzzer to send the game into overtime 58-58. In the extra period Jamal Sloan, Lamar Williams and Winston Robinson all hit big shots. The CHP was up 67 - 65 with 7 seconds remaining when Justin Ayers missed a 10 footer. The rebound came off to Lamar Williams who secured the rebound and got fouled. The Refs didn't call the foul, instead called a held ball giving the Reedley Tigers one more opportunity. The ball was taken out under the Chaffey basket with 1 second on the clock. The Tigers ran a play on the baseline which was intercepted by Lamar Williams as the clock expired. The men are ranked 14th in the state and 6th in Southern California in the November 9th Coaches' Poll! The men take on Santa Ana tonight at Pasadena.
8/2/08 PRE-SEASON PLAY: 2008 SoCal Hoop Review Showcase Summary at Azusa Pacific University All rankings are based on the players and teams I saw play at the 2008 SoCal Hoop Review Showcase. There were 35 teams involved. I managed to see 31 of them in a total of 18 games (I'd seen the other four in prior events this summer), including several teams twice. And of course, all these opinions are my own and have some degree of subjectivity. I've roughly followed the stats and results, but there is some subjective judgment involved as well. I recognize there's plenty of room for disagreement, but this is what I think...
Most Outstanding Player: Winston Robinson, SF, Chaffey
Most Outstanding Teams: JCHoops.com All-Showcase Team: First Team:
7/16/08 PRE-SEASON PLAY: PANTHERS LOSE TO FOOTHILL IN OT The 3 Stripes JC Shootout took place July 12-13 at the Galen Center on the campus of USC. Some 36 teams attended the event, including teams from both Northern and Southern California. Fresno and Foothill from the North were the only undefeated teams at the Showcase. Ctr Terance Pellum had 22 pts, 16 rebs and 4 asts, and drained the winning free throw to lift Foothill to a 66-64 overtime win over Chaffey after rallying from an 18-point second-half deficit. Pellum had a remarkable game, scoring 16 of his points and grabbing 13 of his rebounds after halftime. But Chaffey seemed to be in control most of the game anyway, building a 9-point halftime lead that expanded to 18 at 45-27 early in the second half. After that, however, Foothill went on a 21-4 run to cut the margin to a single point at 49-48, and eventually tied the game at 54 with 5:22 remaining after a 3-pointer by SG Kevin Dinardi. Chaffey responded by taking a 61-56 lead after a 3-pointer by SF Nick Turner, but Foothill got a 2-point free throw by Pellum and a 3-ponter by PF Michael Weimer to tie the game at 61 with 25 seconds left and send the game to overtime. In overtime, the first team to 5 would be declared the winner. Weimer knocked down a three to give Foothill a 64-61 lead, but SF Winston Robinson answered with a 3-pointer of his own to again tie the game at 64. Chaffey had a chance to win the game when Robinson went to the line after a rebound, but he missed the free throw and Pellum was fouled after corralling the rebound. Then Pellum went to the free throw line and knocked down the game-winning shot. For Chaffey, Robinson led the way with 14 pts, 5 rebs and 4 steals. PG Anthony Cammon added 13 pts, all in the first half as he made his first four shots of the game. Turner came off the bench to score 9 pts for the Panthers.

Last Saturday, the men broke the Chaffey record for highest scoring game with a 133-78 W over Barstow. The men travel to College of the Desert tomorrow to take on the #2 Roadrunners and then play at home Wednesday to play #3 Antelope Valley at 7 pm. 12/14/07 The men took on the Pasadena Lancers last night – winning 100-93 for their 4th consecutive win. Leading the Panthers to victory were, freshman, Winston Robinson with 27 points (including 11 free throws) and sophomore, Brandon Clemons with 15 points (including three 3-point shots). Then men have a two week break before the College of the Desert Tournament December 27th-29th. 11/29/07 It COULD have been a brutal loss last night when the Fullerton Hornets visited Chaffey for non-conference play. Ranked last week at #1, Fullerton beat Antelope Valley (a Foothill Conference favorite) last week by 38 points. It was obvious they were expecting to leave Chaffey with a similar notch in their belt. But Klein and his CHP had a different game in mind. Their players may have been taller but they couldn’t keep up with the speed and spirit of the Panthers. In the end, the Hornets were victorious – beating the Panthers by only 14 points – their largest lead of the game! Winston Robinson shined on the court, leading the team with 29 points. 11/15/07 The winter athletics season has officially begun with the men and women both participating in tournaments last weekend. The men fought hard but lost two games at El Camino. Both teams open the home season this weekend – the men Saturday at 3 pm and the women Friday at 7 pm.
