CHAFFEY COLLEGE TO LAUNCH 6 PROGRAMS FUNDED THROUGH FEDERAL STIMULUS FUNDS

(Chino, CA) Last evening the Chaffey College Economic Development department held an event to officially launch six training programs funded through ARRA federal stimulus funds. These programs are designed to train San Bernardino County residents for jobs in sectors such as renewable energy. The event was hosted by Chaffey College, the County of San Bernardino, Workforce Investment Board, and the Green Valley Initiative at the Chino Community Center on the Chaffey College Chino Campus.

Chaffey College was the recipient of more than $700,000 in federal stimulus funds approved through the San Bernardino County Workforce Investment Board earlier this year which will be used to provide training courses to local residents. Beginning in January 2010, the college will offer classes in Automotive Repair Technician, Medical Billing and Coding, vocational English-as-a-Second Language, Home Entertainment & Telecom C-TECH Certification, Energy Efficiency Retrofit Technician, and LEED Green Associate Certification.

Medical Billing & Coding along with the Automotive Repair Technician training programs are offered for credit on the Rancho Campus and for the last few semesters have been impacted.  The other trainings were selected based on employment projections and industry requests.  Additionally the coordinators would like to incubate programs that could potentially become credit-based programs once proven to be successful.

Training programs were selected based on employment projections and industry requests. All of the newly funded programs are “not for college credit” courses.

A representative from the Green Valley Initiative stated that the Inland Empire has experienced significant job growth in the areas of energy efficiency and ‘green’ related jobs.  In addition, information states that the home entertainment and telecom industries are hiring qualified technicians, primarily due to the fact that people are spending more time at home and investing in home entertainment equipment.

Information on these programs and registration dates can be obtained through the Chaffey College department of Economic Development. The contact phone number is 909/652-7663.
