CHAFFEY COLLEGE REPORTS RECORD NUMBER OF STUDENTS FOR FALL SEMESTER 2009
(Rancho Cucamonga) Chaffey College began the new school year on Monday, August 24 reaching a historical milestone. A record number of students attended classes at the college's three campuses. As of the first day of instruction, 19,682 students were enrolled at Chaffey College, exceeding the 19,053 students who were counted at the first census in the fall 2008 semester. This represents a 3.3% increase or 629 additional students.
The Budget constraints have caused the college to reduce offerings, cut back on services, and think creatively about how to serve students. Unfortunately the college cut 56 sections in the fall semester and the spring semester offerings are expected to be reduced by that amount. "Our goal is to preserve the integrity of our educational programming and ensure we offer as many transfer, career technical, and basic skills courses as possible," stated Dr. Sherrie Guerrero, Vice President of Instruction and Student Services.
Many residents of the Chaffey College District have been affected by the economic challenges and are choosing to go back to school for career training and educational purposes.
Students like Lynette Griffin, a wife and mother of two young children, chose to return to college. Griffin, a local caterer, saw a decline in business and decided to make a career change. She enrolled full-time in general education classes to prepare her to transfer into a physical therapy program.
Students that attend the Chaffey College Rancho Cucamonga campus account for a large percent, 80% of the enrollment. The college's Fontana Campus has 2, 306 or 12% of the students attending classes with the Chino reporting 3,364 students and 17% of the college's enrollment.
Chaffey College is a community college offering two-year degrees and transfer courses for students pursuing a baccalaureate degree. Chaffey also offers excellent occupational training for those pursuing professional development.
