Overview and Description
This year’s Faculty Summer Institute centers around the theme of Hope and Mindset: Digging Deeper and Reaching Farther. Participants will explore the principles and strategies in What the Best College Teachers Do and What the Best College Students Do byKen Bain. Using these books as a foundation, participants will examine ways to integrate hope, mindset, and best practices into their approach to teaching and learning. FSI 2013 participants will receive $25/hour for a total of 20 hours (participants are expected to attend all sessions). Participants will receive an additional $200 stipend upon completion of their project. Project presentations will be on Friday, February 7, 2014 between 9am and 2pm with another possible day added on Friday, February 14, 2014.
Application Process and Procedures
Applications will be accepted until Monday, April 15, 2013 by 2:00 PM.† All applicants must have a fall 2013 teaching assignment (verified by the Dean).† All participants will be required to attend all sessions and times (May 24, 28 – 31, no weekend meetings, from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM).
The Selection Process:
In order to fulfill the goals of the grant, priority will be given to first-time participants. Additionally, to encourage diversity of perspectives from various disciplines and the sharing of strategies to the campus community, this Faculty Summer Institute has been designed to include faculty (including counselors, success center instructional specialists, and librarians) from each school. We hope to have a ratio of at least 50% full-time instructors/50% adjunct instructors. If not all spots from a particular group are filled, the pool will open up to other instructors at that point.
The general format will enable participants to engage as scholar-educators throughout each day's curriculum. These sessions will focus on practical and concrete strategies that instructors can use with students. Regular small group interaction incorporated into each session will provide ongoing dialogue opportunities within and outside each participantís disciplines and schools.
Day-to-day schedule of activities will be posted soon.
