JOB SEARCH: OVERVIEW

Looking for a job? We can help!

These pages are designed to assist you with conducting an organized and comprehensive job search.  Check out each section below to get tips on where to find jobs and how to prepare for them.  Also, be sure to review our page on employment fraud to make sure you don’t fall victim to those who prey on job seekers.

Get Connected on Chaffey Connect

Chaffey Connect is an online career services portal exclusively for Chaffey College students and alumni.  Tools to assist with your job search include a private job board of on- and off-campus positions, an employer profile database, and a resume and letter writing tool.  Many of the positions on the Chaffey Connect job board are advertised solely for Chaffey College students.  Create a free account today at www.chaffey.edu/chaffeyconnect.

Polish Your Resume and Interviewing Skills

A well written resume and strong interviewing skills are necessary to convince employers that you have the knowledge, skills, and experience to successfully do a job.  Make sure that you target your resume and cover letter to each job you apply for.  Also, be sure to practice your interviewing skills and be prepared for commonly-asked interview questions.  Students are encouraged to contact the Career Center to schedule an appointment for resume and interviewing skills assistance.

Schedule Time

A job search takes time.  For many people, it helps to schedule regular time to work on their job search so that their time spent is both focused and productive.  The more time you put into your job search, the better chance you have of achieving your goal!

In many cases, job announcements close after a very short posting period, and sometimes you will not find out about an opportunity until just before the deadline.  Therefore, it is recommended that you make time to fully prepare for your job search by keeping important employment documents ready and up-to-date such as your resume, cover letter, reference letters, and educational documentation (i.e., transcripts, certifications, licenses, etc.).  The Chaffey Connect system allows you to upload and store as many employment documents as necessary under the “Documents” section.

Networking

It is estimated that seventy to eighty percent of available jobs are never advertised, and over half of all employees get their jobs through networking.  Remember, when networking, it’s not just about who you know; it’s also about who knows you and how familiar they are with your skills and abilities.

This means that you need to be careful not to put all of your eggs in one basket. It’s important that you educate yourself on all of your options and conduct a broad, and thorough, job search.  Learn more about professional networking at www.chaffey.edu/careercenter/networking.
