Chaffey College and CSUSB Officials Sign Dual Admissions Agreement

(Rancho Cucamonga, CA) - Officials from Chaffey College in Rancho Cucamonga and California State University, San Bernardino will sign a new dual admissions agreement that will allow students to be admitted to Chaffey College and CSUSB at the same time.

The agreement is the first of its kind between these institutions of higher education and was officially approved by the Chaffey College Board of Trustees for a period of three years.

CSUSB President Albert Karnig and Chaffey College Superintendent/President Henry Shannon unveiled the details at a news conference on Tuesday, September 30 at Chaffey College.

Chaffey College is among the top providers of community college transfers to Cal State San Bernardino. Officials from Chaffey and CSUSB are optimistic that the new program will further increase the transfer rate of college going students.

"I am so pleased to sign this agreement on behalf of the Chaffey Community College Governing Board," said Dr. Shannon. "Transfer opportunities are important to our students and through this partnership our students will benefit."

"We're delighted to have this agreement with Chaffey College, especially since we already have such a strong relationship and many of our students have transferred from there," said Karnig. "We hope the services in the agreement encourage more Chaffey students to continue their education, whether at CSUSB or elsewhere, and improve their chances of securing a university degree."

"Dual admissions agreements are one of a number of initiatives between the California State University and California's community college system designed to strengthen and build upon existing articulation efforts," said Robert McGowan, CSUSB associate vice president for enrollment services.

Cal State San Bernardino also has similar dual admissions agreements with San Bernardino Valley College, Riverside City College, Victor Valley College, College of the Desert, Palo Verde College and Copper Mountain College.

The goals of the agreement are to increase the transfer rate from campuses from Chaffey College to CSUSB, increase the completion rate of Chaffey students once they enroll at the university, strengthen articulation efforts and coordinate course work between the district and the university.

Students who enter into the dual admission agreement will be required to complete 60 semester credits while maintaining a minimum 2.0 grade point average at Chaffey College. Applicants will be required to attend seminars that are held each semester and meet with college counseling staff to set goals and complete university admission requirements. A unique portion of the agreement entitles the students to additional services at Cal State San Bernardino, including library access and the opportunity to cross-enroll on a space-available basis without paying instructional fees.

The program will be evaluated for effectiveness on an annual basis. Following the three-year term of the agreement, Chaffey and CSUSB have the option to renew the agreement.
