(Chino, CA) A dedication ceremony on the new Chaffey College Chino campus was held yesterday, October 22. More than 100 guests including local residents, business leaders, and community officials gathered to dedicate the Health Science and Chino Community Centers.

The ceremony began under the warmth of the afternoon sun with emcee Dr. Linda Howdyshell, Vice President and Chief Administrative Officer of the Chino Campus welcoming attendees. Guests convened in front of the Health Science center a 16,000 square foot teaching facility for the college’s vocational nursing program. It houses classrooms, laboratories, and offices which enabled the nursing program to increase enrollment.

Chaffey College Governing Board President, Kathy Brugger provided a historical perspective of the Chino Campus, while Gary George, Governing Board Vice President hosted the building dedication. “Construction of the Health Science center was made possible because of one individual’s commitment to education,” said George. San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors Chairman, Gary Ovitt was instrumental in donating $4 million for construction of the facility. “Supervisor Ovitt understands the importance of education and through his relationship with Chaffey College and commitment our community, the Health Science center was created,” exclaimed George. The $4 million donation by the San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors was from the tobacco tax. The total cost to construct the facility was $10 million.

The Health Science center is the first building of three that will make up the Health Science complex. To acknowledge Ovitt’s contribution, the Chaffey College Governing Board voted to name the complex the “Gary C. Ovitt Health Science Complex.” Ovitt was unaware that college planned to recognize him and was honored to have a complex named after him.

The ceremony included dedicating a second building on the Chino Campus; the Chaffey College Chino Community Center, a teaching facility and banquet hall. This 22,000 square foot facility includes a state-of-the-art kitchen for the culinary arts program and classrooms and laboratories for the fashion design and merchandising program.

The 5,200 square foot banquet hall offers magnificent style and ambiance for weddings, special events, and business functions. The Chino Community Center is managed by both the college and the city.

Dennis Yates, mayor of the City of Chino, told attendees that the city and college has shared a great relationship for many years. “We remember in 2000 when the first Chaffy College Chino Center opened on Central Avenue, and just two years later together we constructed the Information Technology Center,” boasted Yates. “Today we are here celebrating the creation of another educational facility, the Chaffey College Chino Community Center,” said Yates.

The Chaffey College Chino Campus opened in May 2008 providing educational opportunities to the residents of the Chino Valley. It is located on College Park Avenue in the City of Chino. For more information about Chaffey College, visit
