RANCHO CUCAMONGA, CA. - The annual Chaffey College Alumni of the Year/Athletic Hall of Fame dinner will be held on Tuesday, April 7, 2015 at the Doubletree Hotel in Ontario. Five outstanding Chaffey College alumni will be recognized at the annual dinner, hosted by the Chaffey College Foundation.

The Alumni of the Year award recognizes individuals who have attended Chaffey College and serve the community in an exemplary manner. Individuals are recognized for their service to the community, for being an outstanding citizen, and for representing the Chaffey College alumni.

The 2015 Chaffey College Alumni of the Year recipients are Roy Akers, retired entrepreneur and author, Trisha Martinez, city council member, city of Montclair, and G. Michael Milheiser, chief administrative officer, Morongo Band of Mission Indians.

Chaffey College alumnus, Roy Akers served in the U.S. Navy for 4 years before beginning a successful career at Kaiser Steel in Fontana. Akers is an innovator in manufactured housing and insulation/foil technological development and has received numerous accolades during his 30 year. Today, Akers is an active blogger and published author, penning “A Long Road Home” (Tate Publishing) in 2013.

The second individual honored as the 2015 Chaffey College Alumni of the Year is Trisha Martinez. A natural leader, Martinez was active in student affairs at Chaffey College. Upon completing her studies at Chaffey, Martinez attended USC and then California Southern University. She was elected to the Montclair City Council in November after campaigning to contribute to the city’s strong leadership on the council. Martinez is a member of the Ontario-Montclair Junior Women’s Club, Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic School, and works with the Montclair Chamber of Commerce.

The third outstanding member of the Chaffey College alumni is G. Michael Milhiser who has served in a many prominent positions throughout the region. Milhiser is currently the Chief Administrative Officer for the Morongo Band of Mission Indians and continues to sit on many local and regional boards, including the Monte Vista Water District (elected) and the James L. White West End YMCA.

The collaborative event also includes the Athletic Hall of Fame award for outstanding Chaffey College student- athletes. The Chaffey College Athletic Hall of Fame award honors individuals who were outstanding student-athletes. The award also recognizes individuals for their service to the community. The alumni athletes being inducted into the 2015 Chaffey College Athletic Hall of Fame are Grant Rice, head basketball coach and Laura Uribe, pharmacy technician.

Rice played college basketball at Chaffey College before transferring to UNLV.  Today, he is the head basketball coach at Bishop Gorman High School in Las Vegas, Nevada. In the 13 seasons as head coach Rice has guided the Gaels to seven Nevada State Championships. He has an overall coaching record of 343-65, including a #7 national ranking in 2010 and top 10 finishes in 2012, 2013, and 2014.

The second athlete to be inducted into the Chaffey College Athletic Hall of Fame this year is Laura Uribe, a pharmacy technician at Loma Linda University. Uribe received numerous accolades as a standout swimmer and water polo player at Chaffey College in 2004 and 2005. She went on to study and compete at UC Davis, where as a senior in 2008 she helped the program capture the Western Water Polo Association title and a berth at the NCAA Championship.

This year’s recipients will be recognized at the 2015 Alumni of the Year/Athletic Hall of Fame Dinner on Tuesday, April 7 at the Doubletree Hotel in Ontario. The event begins with a reception at 5:30 pm, followed by dinner and the awards program at 6:30 pm. The event is open to the public. Tickets are available through the Chaffey College Foundation for $75 per person or $550 per table of eight.
