Emily received her Bachelor of Science (B.S.) with Honors in Biology and Animal Science from New Mexico State University. She earned her Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Cell and Molecular Biology from Michigan State University where her research was focused on the characterization of a family of vacuolar sorting receptors in Arabidopisis thaliana.

Emily continued her research with Dr. Natasha Raikhel in the Center for Plant Cell Biology at University of California, Riverside while exploring her interest in community college education by teaching part-time at San Bernardino Valley College. She later left research to pursue a career in community college education, and taught part-time at several local community colleges prior to seizing an opportunity to teach full-time at Chaffey College.

Currently, Emily teaches Introduction to Cell and Molecular Biology, Biology of Organisms, as well as various general education biology courses. She is also advisor to the Pre-Vet Club on campus. Her most recent research interests have been focused on the use of molecular tools to identify and distinguish between ant species in Southern California.

Outside of Chaffey College, Emily is an active member of Grace Lutheran Church in Upland, and enjoys coaching her son’s T-ball team in the summer. Her hobbies include sewing and culinary arts. In fact, one of Emily’s proudest personal achievements was being awarded the blue ribbon at the 2013 Orange County Fair for her homemade strawberry jam.
