Disability Program and Services (DPS)

Alternate Media

What is Alternate Media?

Alternative media is the provision of printed materials in an alternative format for individuals with visual, physical or information processing disabilities. Alternative media, commonly referred to as “alt media” is the conversion of required course materials such as textbooks, coursework, exams and other print materials into an accessible format, such as PDF, RTF (Rich Text Format) or DOC (Document), DAISY (Digital Accessible Information System), MP3 (Audio) and Braille.

The Disability Programs and Services (DPS) accommodates students with alternative media accommodations from the assistance of the alternative media specialist.

What is an Alternate Media Technical Specialist?

The Alternate Media Technical Specialist is an individual who under the supervision of the director of DPS provides district wide leadership and training in the area of access technology for faculty and staff to benefit students with disabilities. Provide leadership in web page design and distance education delivery methods to ensure accessible formats for persons with disabilities. Additionally, oversee the conversion of print materials and videos to an alternative media format, (i.e. Braille, closed caption), and provide training to students using a variety of alternate technology. Please find below a list of documents that will assist students interested in DPS alternate media services.
