Supplemental Learning Requirement for
English 500, 550, 450 and 1A and Reading 550, 530, 520, and 510
The 4-hour
supplemental learning requirement for English 500 and 550, 3-hour supplemental learning requirement for 450 and 1A, and 10-hour supplemental learning requirement for Reading 550, 530, 520, and 510 can be
satisfied by completing Directed
Learning Activities, workshops, and
learning groups. For English, consult the Supplemental Learning Guide for details about completing your requiremement. For reading, consult your instructor's verification form. Tutoring on assigned
papers or reading homework does not count toward supplemental learning. You may
complete supplemental learning activities at the Language Success Center, the Chino Success Center, or the Fontana Success Center. Be mindful of the supplemental learning deadlines.
Directed Learning Activities One way to satisfy the
supplemental learning requirement for English and reading classes is to complete Directed Learning Activites. English 500, 550, 450, and 1A students can choose from a list of Directed Learning Activities. Reading 550, 530, 520, and 510 students have specific DLAs assigned; see your instructor's verification form for details. These activities consist
of an independent portion that takes approximately 30-60 minutes to
finish and a follow-up session with a tutor that lasts approximately
15-30 minutes depending on the activity. The independent portion of a
Directed Learning Activity can be done in the Language Success Center without an
appointment. However, an appointment for the follow-up
session with the tutor is strongly recommended.
Another way to satisfy
the supplemental learning requirement for English and reading classes is to attend a Language Success Center subject-specific workshop. Workshops are 50-
to 60-minute
small group sessions that are taught by faculty tutors and cover a range
of topics from prewriting activities to reading strategies. Writing workshops are limited to ten participants, and reading workshops are limited to fifteen students. The workshops tend to fill up quickly. You may set an appointment for a workshop up
to five business days in advance.
Note: Students in an English class may only attend writing/English workshops for supplemental learning credit, and students in a reading class may only attend reading workshops for supplemental learning credit. Attending a workshop for a different course will not count for subject-specific supplemental learning credit.
When attending a workshop at the Language Success Center, plan on arriving ten minutes before the workshop begins. If you arrive late, you may lose your reserved spot to a student on the waitlist.
Yet another way to
satisfy the supplemental learning requirement for English classes is to attend a learning group. Learning groups are 50- to
60-minute
sessions that focus on a particular writing skill or
assignment. While the Language Success Center offers learning groups on set topics, instructors may arrange learning group sessions on topics of their choice by contacting
the Language Success Center, the Chino Success Center,
or the Fontana Success Center.
Check with your instructor to find out if a learning group has been
scheduled for your class.
