Frequently Asked Questions

How much money will I receive from my VA education benefits?

For payment rates click here.

Do I need to do anything else to get paid after I have completed the paperwork at the college Veteran Services Office?

(1) You must verify your enrollment to the VA via WAVE every month , (2) you must notify the college Veteran Services office each semester you wish your educational benefits to be continued, and (3) you must notify the college Veterans Office if you add/drop a class, or withdraw from college. NOTE: Those receiving the Post-9/11 GI Bill or Dependents Education Assistance do not have to verify their attendance through WAVE. Your school certifying official is responsible for verifying your attendance with VA at the beginning of your term. You are responsible for ensuring that your school certifying official is aware of your enrollment, and any subsequent changes in your schedule.

Can I get paid by VA for taking courses at another school at the same time I am taking courses at Chaffey College?

Yes, if the courses are equivalent to courses needed for your education goal. Contact the college Veteran Services office for details and reporting requirements.

Can my VA education benefit payments be suspended for any reason?

Yes. If you are placed on academic/progress probation for 3 semesters, your VA education benefits will be suspended.

Do I have to pay back the VA if I fail a class?

If you fail a class, the college Veteran Services office will send you a letter asking you to document your attendance in the class. As long as (1) you attended the class for the entire term, and (2) returned the letter citing this attendance to the college Veteran Services office, you will not have to pay the VA back.
Note:
Your instructor will also be asked to verify your attendance.

How do I get another DD214 if I lost mine?

For information on replacing a DD 214, click here.

Can I get college credit for my military service?

Six units of credits can be awarded by this college for electives only. If you do not need elective courses for your education goal, these six units will not apply towards your college degree.

Can courses I completed in the military count as college credit?

Once you have completed 12 units at Chaffey College and have a total of 30 semester units, the Admissions and Records Office will evaluate any military coursework on your SMART transcript for possible college credit (you will need to provide the SMART transcript)

How do I pick a major?

The VA requires that you declare a major in order to receive VA education benefits. You can change your major in the future if necessary.

If you are undecided as to a major, you have two options:
You can declare your major as “Universal Studies.” This major encompasses general education courses: English, mathematics, social and behavioral sciences, natural sciences, arts and humanities.

You can select a major based on your current interests. This usually means selecting a major that gives you knowledge/skills in the occupational field that you hope to become employed in.
The college catalog contains information on majors related to associate degrees (2 year degrees) and to certificate programs (See the “Degree and Certificates” section of the catalog). For majors related to bachelors degrees (4 year degrees), see the “Graduation Requirements and Transfer Information” section of the catalog.

How can I get questions answered for my specific situation?
