"When I compared the pass rate of my SI class to prior semesters of accounting, the overall pass rate improved significantly. Most importantly, I noticed that the students had more confidence with the subject matter. The increase in confidence was in part due to getting to know other students by attending SI sessions. The confidence was also due to the SI discussion groups. During the sessions, students were actively using accounting terminology and working additional problems. This provided students with additional time on tasks, and it also increased the students' knowledge of the subject matter. Getting to know other students also provided other benefits. For example, it provided the students with a resource group both in accounting and in their other courses. Therefore, students were able to form their own cohort and rely on each other as a Chaffey resource. Course participation also improved. Students were more willing to ask and answer questions during class. While discussing complex subjects, during class, SI students would offer an alternative explanation which was previously discussed during the SI sessions."
"The SI program has proven to be invaluable. My class with SI has 37 remaining students whereas the class without SI (same time of day/same instructor/book/etc) only has 25 with a much lower average on assignments. The numbers are overwhelming as well as the intangible difference I see in student confidence and their willingness to ask the SI leader for assistance."
"The two SI leaders I selected were both two of my top accounting students. Therefore, I had great confidence in their ability to assist other students with an understanding of accounting. The unexpected benefits of the SI program were to watch my former students become both outstanding scholars of accounting and also become great facilitators. The SI leaders also inspired a great deal of confidence with the students. For example, during class sessions, students would seek help from the SI leaders. Students would come to class early to discuss complex issues with the SI leaders. As a result, the camaraderie between the SI leaders and the students improved the in class discussions of complex issues."
"The program is wonderful –everyone benefits and I couldn't be more thrilled with it!"
