Seventeenth Annual Scholarship Program
2008-2009

Total To Be Awarded: $125,000

Individual applications become available February 2, 2009 in Student Activities or on-line.

NO LATE APPLICATIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED!

All scholarships are funded by the College Service Fee.

All applicants must be currently enrolled at Chaffey College during the spring 2009 semester and have paid all college fees.

To apply, please pick up an application in Student Activities between Monday, Februayr 2 and Wednesday, March 25. All scholarship applications must be submitted to Student Activities by March 25 at 5:00 p.m. All applications must be typed to be processed. You may not apply for any scholarships that you have received in any previous years. Maximum award per student from ASCC/Student Activities is $2,000. All GPAs are cumulative totals as of fall semester 2008. Faculty letters must be from current Chaffey College Faculty. Students who submit plagiarized work will be disqualified from the process.



1.  ASCC "Keys to Success" Scholarship

10 Scholarships - $1,000 each

Eligibility: Discuss your personal philosophy on the way you live or aspire to live in order to be successful in life. Submit a 2-3 page, double-spaced, typed essay explaining what "success" means to you. Provide details of your experiences.

2.  ASCC Overcoming Obstacles Scholarship

15 Scholarships - $1,000 each

Eligibility: Write a 2-3 page, double-spaced, typed essay that explains the obstacles you face on your quest for higher education and how you overcome them.

3.  ASCC What Has Chaffey Taught Me? Scholarship

3 Scholarships- $1,000 each

Eligibility: Write a 2-3 page, double-spaced, typed essay that relates a personal story of academic success or failure at Chaffey College. Emphasize what insight you gained.

4.  ASCC Educational Reflection Scholarship

4 Scholarships- $1,000 each

Eligibility: Write a 2-3 page, double-spaced, typed essay about how an early experience in school helped determine your educational path.

5.  ASCC Making Chaffey a Better Place Scholarship

1 Scholarship- $1,000

Eligibility: Write a 2-3 page, double-spaced, typed essay that offers specific, practical ways to improve Chaffey College. An outstanding essay will make a cost-conscious recommendation that focuses on how to implement this idea and the ways in which the change will benefit students.

6.  ASCC First Generation College Student Scholarship

10 Scholarships - $1,000 each

Eligibility: Students must have completed at least 40 units and be the first in their immediate family* to pursue a college/university degree (in any country). Applicants must have a minimum cumulative g.p.a. of 2.50, one (1) letter of recommendation from a faculty member, and a one (1) page, double-spaced, typed essay discussing family, educational goals, and objectives. (*Immediate family means parents and siblings.)

7.  ASCC Occupational/Vocational Scholarship

4 Scholarships - $1,000 each

Eligibility: Students must be currently enrolled in a certificate program in which they have completed at least 9 units. Applicants must have a minimum cumulative g.p.a. of 2.50, and submit one (1) letter of recommendation from a faculty member in the program, and a one (1) page, double-spaced, typed essay on financial need and career goals.

8.  ASCC Outstanding ESL Student Scholarship

1 Scholarship - $1,000

Eligibility: Students must have successfully completed 6 units of ESL coursework and must submit a letter of recommendation from a faculty member. The ESL student must also submit a one (1) page, double-spaced, typed essay that discusses his/her educational experience and goals.

9.  ASCC Promising New Student Scholarship

3 Scholarships - $1,000 each

Eligibility: Students must have a minimum cumulative g.p.a. of 2.75 must have completed no more than 24 units, and must submit a letter of recommendation from a faculty member. Student must also submit a one (1) page, double-spaced, typed essay on their career and educational goals.

10.  ASCC Outstanding Evening Student Scholarship

5 Scholarships - $1,000 each

Eligibility: Students must have a minimum cumulative g.p.a. of 2.50, with at least 6 completed units, must be currently enrolled in a minimum of 6 units of evening classes (classes starting 4:00 pm or later), and must submit a letter of recommendation from a faculty member. Student must also submit a one (1) page, double-spaced, typed essay discussing what higher education means to them.

11.  ASCC Outstanding Parent Scholarship

3 Scholarships - $1,000 each

Eligibility: Students must be currently enrolled in a minimum of 6 units with at least 30 units completed and child/children in the home full-time (18 years old or younger). Applicants must have a minimum g.p.a. of 2.50; submit one (1) faculty letter of recommendation, and a one (1) page, double-spaced, typed essay on the challenges of meeting educational goals while being a parent.

12.  ASCC Outstanding Working Student Scholarship

7 Scholarships - $1,000 each

Eligibility: Eligibility: Students must be currently enrolled in a minimum of 6 units and must have proof of working 19 or more hours per week; they must have completed 12 units at Chaffey College, and must have a minimum g.p.a. of 2.50. Students must also submit a one (1) page, double-spaced, typed essay that describes the greatest work-related or school-related obstacle they have had to overcome to achieve their educational goals.

13.  ASCC Public Service Career Scholarship

1 Scholarship - $1,000

Eligibility: Student must have a minimum cumulative g.p.a. of 2.75 must have completed 24 units, and must submit a letter of recommendation from a faculty member. Students must also submit a 2-3 page, double-spaced, typed essay on how their chosen profession improves the quality of life.

14.  ASCC Most Academically-Improved Student Scholarship

2 Scholarships - $1,000 each

Eligibility: Students must show an increase in g.p.a. over a period of time and must have 24 units completed. Student must submit a 1-2 page, double-spaced, typed essay explaining the academic improvement, a letter of recommendation from a faculty member, and transcripts from all institutions that illustrate academic improvement.

15.  ASCC Outstanding Re-entry Student Scholarship

5 Scholarships - $1,000 each

Eligibility: Students must have a minimum cumulative g.p.a. of 2.50 and must be returning after a minimum five-year absence from school. Students must submit a 2-3 page, double-spaced, typed essay explaining their reason for returning to school and any obstacles they have faced.

16.  ASCC Outstanding Chino Campus Student Scholarship (Bob Pile Memorial Award)

1 Scholarship - $1,000 each

Eligibility: Student must have a minimum cumulative g.p.a. of 2.50, be currently enrolled in a minimum of 6 units at the Chino Center or Information Technology Center, and submit a letter of recommendation from a faculty member who teaches at the Center site. Student must also submit a one (1) page, double-spaced, typed essay discussing their educational goals.

17.  ASCC Outstanding Fontana Campus Student Scholarship (Bob Pile Memorial Award)

1 Scholarship - $1,000 each

Eligibility: Student must have a minimum cumulative g.p.a. of 2.50, be currently enrolled in a minimum of 6 units at the Fontana Campus, and submit a letter of recommendation from a faculty member who teaches at the Center site. Student must also submit a one (1) page, double-spaced, typed essay discussing their educational goals.

18.  ASCC Outstanding Differently-Abled Student Scholarship

1 Scholarship - $1,000

Eligibility: Student must have a minimum cumulative g.p.a. of 2.50 and must have at least 12 units completed and a letter of recommendation from a faculty member. Student must submit a one (1) page, double-spaced, typed essay on his/her disability (physical, learning, or developmental), educational goals and achievements.

19.  ASCC Bea Rose Teaching Scholarship
Faculty Emeritus-Philosophy Department


1 Scholarship - $1,000

Eligibility: Student must be currently enrolled with a minimum g.p.a of 3.00 and have completed 40 units. Student must submit a letter of recommendation from a faculty member and a one (1) page, double-spaced, typed essay on "Why I want to be a teacher" at an elementary, secondary, or college institution.

20.  ASCC Karma Miller Scholarship

1 Scholarship- $1,000 and plaque

Eligibility: Student must have participated in a student club, been a student athlete or shown leadership at Chaffey during the 2008-2009 year. Student must submit a 1-2 page, double-spaced, typed essay on their involvement and value of experience. Faculty letter of recommendation required (from a Chaffey club advisor, coach, or professor).

21.  ASCC Outstanding Student Veteran Scholarship

1 Scholarship- $1,000 and plaque

Eligibility: Student must have a minimum cumulative g.p.a. of 2.50 and must have at least 12 units completed and a letter of recommendation from a faculty member. Student must submit a one (1) page, double-spaced, typed essay on how his/her experiences in the military helped lead to him/her to Chaffey College.

22.  ASCC Outstanding International Student Scholarship

1 Scholarship- $1,000 and plaque

Eligibility: Student must have a minimum cumulative g.p.a. of 2.50 and must have at least 12 units completed and a letter of recommendation from a faculty member. Student must submit a one (1) page, double-spaced, typed essay on how his/her experiences in another country have influenced the type of student he/she is today.

23.  ASCC Outstanding Transfer Opportunity Scholarship

10 Scholarships - $2,000 each

Eligibility: Students must have completed at least 45 units with a minimum cumulative g.p.a. of 2.75. Students must submit one (1) letter of recommendation from a faculty member and a one (1) page, double-spaced, typed essay on the topic "What does this transfer opportunity mean to you?" Students must be transferring in 2009 and discuss the university they are transferring to.

24.  ASCC Outstanding Graduate Scholarship

10 Scholarships - $2,000 each

Eligibility: Students must be eligible to participate in the May 2009 graduation ceremony. Students must have applied for graduation by the deadline of March 6, 2009 and must have a cumulative g.p.a. of 2.75 and 45 completed units. Students must submit a letter of recommendation from a faculty member and a one (1) page, double-spaced, typed essay discussing financial need and educational goals.

25.  ASCC Dr. Henry Shannon Presidential Scholarship

1 Scholarship $2,000 and Plaque

Eligibility: Student must have a minimum cumulative g.p.a. of 2.50 at least 24 units completed, and two faculty (working during the 2008-2009 academic year) letters of recommendation. Student must have participated in off-campus community service or in an unpaid position of leadership on campus and must submit a two (2) page, double-spaced, typed essay on the importance of leadership and service to others in our society.

26.  ASCC/Student Activities Valedictorian Award

$2,000 per Valedictorian

No application: Students must be graduating with an A.A/A.S. degree, and participating in the 2009 commencement ceremony, with a cumulative g.p.a. of 4.00
(verification/selection by college evaluator) and criteria set as per the Chaffey College catalog (page 18).


The 2008-2009 Faculty Scholarship Selection Committee on behalf of the Associated Students of Chaffey College and the Office of Student Activities will make all selections. Their decisions are final. All recipients will be notified by mail no later than April 13, 2009.

Students who submit plagiarized work will be disqualified from the process.
