CHAFFEY COLLEGE EXPANDS ONLINE TO COLLEGE TO ONTARIO

(Rancho Cucamonga) The Chaffey College “Online to College” program has proven to be so successful, that it will be expanding to the City of Ontario. A celebration will be held on Thursday, October 29, 2009 from 2:00pm – 3:00pm at Corona Elementary School to recognize this expansion.

The Ontario “Online to College” program will begin next fall and will be offered to the 97 fifth grade students at Corona Elementary School. Similar to the program in the City of Montclair, these students will earn a Chaffey College scholarship if they participate in the program continuously through the 12th grade and receive a high school diploma.

Chaffey College, the Montclair Collaborative, and the Ontario-Montclair School District created the “Online to College” program in 1998 to increase the college-going rate among high school graduates in the City of Montclair. The “Online to College” curriculum is offered to students enrolled in the fifth grade at participating schools in the Ontario-Montclair School District. Students who participate in the program continuously through the 12th grade and receive a high school diploma are promised an education at Chaffey College.

Several people together made the expansion into the City of Ontario possible; they share a commitment to education and their communities. The two people that made it happen are Mary Jane Olhasso, City of Ontario economic development director and Dr. Henry Shannon, Chaffey College superintendent/president.

The Ontario “Online to College” is a partnership between Chaffey College, Chaffey College Foundation, City of Ontario, Ontario-Montclair School District, the Alliance for Education, and the Esperanza Foundation.
