Chaffey College Named Winner of 2010 MetLife Foundation Community College Excellence Award

(Rancho Cucamonga, CA) Chaffey College was named as one of three national winners of the prestigious 2010 MetLife Foundation Community College Excellence Award and will be receiving a $50,000 grant.

The MetLife Foundation Community College Excellence Award honors the important roles community colleges play in addressing educational, social and economic needs and opportunities. Chaffey College was recognized in the “Service for Students” category for the Opening Doors Program.

The Chaffey College Opening Doors to Excellence Program is a two-semester program for probationary students. Through the program, these students take two guidance courses taught by a counselor. These courses provide basic information on study skills and the requirements of the college. Students are also required to visit one or more of the success centers that provide assistance with math, writing, reading and multi-disciplinary.

There were three overall winners of the award competition, which is administered by Jobs for the Future and sponsored by the MetLife Foundation, were selected after a careful review process, involving a National Advisory Review Panel of experts and Jobs for the Future staff. Two hundred fifteen applications were received. The selected colleges were narrowed down in stages to nine finalists. The judges visited the nine colleges for site review. Based on this rigorous process, the three award winners were selected.

“Chaffey College is committed to student success,” said Dr. Shannon, Chaffey College superintendent/president. “Through programs like Opening Doors, we can help students reach their academic goals,” he said. “We are honored to receive the Met Life Award for Excellence; it is an honor to be recognized for superior programs such as Opening Doors.”

“My experience in the Opening Doors Program has been one of the best experiences in school and also in my life because they helped me get back on track,” exclaimed Bianca A. Chaffey College student. “They gave me another opportunity to start fresh and get back on course.”

“Innovations on community college campuses are instrumental in retraining and reenergizing the U.S. workforce,” said Marlene Seltzer, president and CEO of Jobs for the Future. “This college is a sterling example of how community colleges can provide creative solutions that specifically address the challenges of a community, while at the same time expanding opportunities for the students and workers of the future.”

“The three winners are exceptional examples of what community colleges do well,” said Dennis White, president and CEO of MetLife Foundation. “All community colleges can recognize something of themselves in these winners and gain new perspectives from their examples.”
