UNDERSECRETARY OF EDUCATION TO ADDRESS GRADUATES AT CHAFFEY COLLEGE 95TH COMMENCEMENT CEREMONY
(Rancho Cucamonga, CA) Chaffey College will host its 95th annual commencement ceremony on Thursday, May 24 at 7:00 p.m. at Grigsby Field on the Rancho Cucamonga Campus. This year's commencement address will be given by Under Secretary of Education Dr. Martha Kanter. Last year Dr. Jack Scott, chancellor of the California Community Colleges, was invited to present the keynote address.
"Dr. Kanter is an amazing educator and representative of community college education," said Dr. Henry Shannon. "She is committed to postsecondary education and we are honored to have her join us at our commencement ceremony," added Shannon.
Kanter was appointed by President Obama as Under Secretary of Education in 2009. She served as chancellor of the Foothill-De Anza Community College District, one of the largest community college districts in the nation, from 2003 to 2009. Kanter is the first community college leader to serve as the undersecretary.
In her two years as Undersecretary of Education Kanter has focused on postsecondary education. Her agenda is to improve American innovation and competitiveness through the college completion agenda, teacher quality reforms, adult education program improvements, modernization of career-technical education, and a new partnership with the U.S. Department of Labor. This partnership includes a federal investment to increase quality, graduation, and employment opportunities for community college students.
Chaffey College is also committed to increasing graduation rates and student success. Despite ongoing budget challenges in the state of California, the class of 2012 has the largest number of degree and certificate earners than any other Chaffey College graduating class. A total of 2,927 awards are expected to be conferred at the 2012 ceremony to 1,475 students. This number represents a 26.9% increase over the number of degrees and certificates awarded in 2010-11. "I attribute the increase in awards to our outstanding faculty, staff, governing board, and most importantly, the students," stated Dr. Shannon. "We are committed to student success and the data proves that together we can achieve greatness."
The 2012 Chaffey College commencement ceremony will be held on Thursday, May 24 at 7:00 p.m. in the college stadium. Seating is limited and is intended for the families and friends of Chaffey College graduates.
