What are online classes?
Online classes at Chaffey College are classes where the students and instructor meet online rather than in the traditional classroom on campus. Chaffey college offers two basic types of online classes: totally online and hybrids. Totally online classes meet totally online. Hybrid courses are courses that meet part of the time in the traditional classroom and partially online.
How do online classes work?
In online classes students and instructors interact with each other online. Students log on to the Chaffey Moodle course management system to get course documents, lectures, and other course materials. Students will interact with each other using various tools such as discussion boards, chat rooms, and e-mail. Students will receive lectures via Podcasts, Word documents, and PowerPoint presentations. Tests and assessment tools are also used to gauge student progress, just as they are in the traditional classroom. While online classes can be accessed anytime, instructors do have due dates and times for assignments.
What is a hybrid course?
A hybrid course is a course that meets partially online and partially in the classroom on campus. For example: Traditionally a class might meet on Monday and Wednesday from 1:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. The hybrid version of the course might meet only on Monday, the Wednesday segment of the class would be online activities.
Do I have to log on at specific times?
Online classes are accessible anytime 24/7. Students must access their online class after noon on the first scheduled day of the class to make sure that the instructor knows they are in the class. Some instructors do have due dates and times for assignments. Some instructors may also have required attendance at chat sessions that would require that the student log in on a specific day and time. However, most online instructors will give the students several options for chat sessions.
Do I need books for online classes?
Yes, if the course traditionally requires a book; then, you will need one for the online course. The Distance Education Office at Chaffey College recommends that students purchase their books for online classes through the Chaffey College bookstore. While prices of books purchased online or elsewhere might be slightly lower, the books for online classes are sometimes customized for the online environment and sometimes contain special access codes that generally are not included with books purchased elsewhere.
Do I need any special software for online classes?
No. Because Chaffey uses the Moodle course management system, students only need to be able to access the Internet. Some instructors do require that homework and assignments be submitted as Word documents or .html files. In these cases students would need access to Word or some other word processing software.

Some instructors may present course materials in PowerPoint, in which case the student might need a PowerPoint viewer. Students can download a free PowerPoint viewer from the Microsoft website.
Are online classes the same as face-to-face classes?
The curriculum and student learning outcomes for online classes are the same as their face-to-face counterpoints. Online classes use a different method of delivery and learning tools.
Are online classes easier than face-to-face classes?
The rigor and content of online classes is comparable to face-to-face classes, the material is just presented differently. Most online classes present the course materials to the students in text format, which requires a lot of reading. Students who are textual learners may find online classes easier because of this. Students who need to hear and see an instructor lecture might find online classes more difficult. Online classes do require that the student be organized and self-motivated.
How do I know if I'm ready for an online class?
Taking an online course is very different than taking a traditional
class. There are many things to consider when trying to decide if you
want to take an online course. Chaffey College Distance Education has designed a questionnaire to help you decide if you are ready for an online class. Click here to access the questionnaire.
I want to take an online class, what do I do first?
If you are currently a Chaffey student, then the first step is to register for the course. The registration for online classes is the same as it is for traditional classes. Once you are registered for the course, log in to Moodle after noon on the first scheduled day of the class and start enjoying the freedom of taking an online class.
If you are not currently a Chaffey student, then the first step would be to begin the admissions process by completing an application to attend Chaffey College. More information about the application process can be found on the Chaffey College Admissions and Records homepage.
How do I register for an online class.
The registration process for online classes is the same as for traditional classes. Students can register using the Panther Line, ChaffeyView, or by visiting any of the Chaffey College Admissions and Records offices.
How much do online classes cost?
Tuition and registration costs for online classes are the same as they are for traditional classes. Online classes usually do not require that the students pay materials fees that are sometimes associated with traditional classes. Some online classes require that students purchase access codes, which can be made at the bookstore.
Can I get my degree online?
