Nicole earned both a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Psychology and a Master of Arts (M.A.) in Psychology – general research, from California State University, Long Beach (CSULB). She transferred to CSULB from Pasadena City College after changing her major from biology to psychology. During graduate school, Nicole worked as a clinical research associate at two organizations: The UCLA Biomedical Institute and UCLA’s Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior. Both of these research projects focused on the effects of methamphetamine addiction.

Nicole’s education and research experience contributed to her knowledge of psychology. Her experience working at various retail jobs since the age of fourteen and as a food server for several years while earning her degrees contributed to shaping her personality, work ethic, and interpersonal skills.

It was during graduate school as a supplemental instructor and graduate assistant that Nicole discovered her passion for teaching (even though she was on a path to become a clinical psychologist). Upon receipt of her Master’s Degree, she began teaching full-time biology labs at USC for one year. This experience prepared her for teaching at numerous colleges as a part-time instructor for the six years following, until she became a full-time professor at Chaffey College in 2012.

Now, as a professor, wife, and mother of two, and having changed her career goal three times, she has no regrets in the decisions she made leading up to where she is now. All courses, work, personal life, and extra-curricular activities have shaped her and opened opportunities that her younger self never imagined.
